Title: Technical Support
Post by: Square-Eyes on October 29, 2012, 02:16:27 PM
I'd like this thread to be open for any suggestions from the computer geeks geniuses among us on how to improve this site.

This is your forum after all.

Thank you :)

Well, I think you should rewrite it in C# or maybe VB, implementing an SQL (or maybe SQLite) database which would be more robust, plus a backup which is regularly run using a batch file. Possibly you could consider using XML for universality.

More smileys would be good - particularly the facepalm one :)

On a different board, we used to have a 'dynamic' head-banging one - and a 'pucking down the toilet' one!!

Are we still having trouble with spammers? That's why this was removed.

Alternatively, if you highlight a posted link in firefox, a left-click gives you the option to follow it.

Dear Square eyes,

Okay we have Monty, your good self, Hope, Outrider and Jakswan, who are not up on computer speak, or whatever, not a criticism, why not let a poster who is up on this stuff on to your team to have a look at what is feasible and what is not, old Grantus I think is good in that dept, not a mod as such, more techy support.

Spammers can still post their links here, it's just that you can't click on them.  I fail to see how this stops spammers.  Other boards e.g. the JREF impose a restriction so that you can't post links until you have a set number of posts.  This, together with moderation should stop spamming.

Not everybody wants to use Firefox.  It's lost its way somewhat in the last few years.

Hi All,

Sometimes posters don't always make it clear who, or which post, they are responding too and it can get a bit confusing.  Perhaps this could be included as an automatic input on the first line by inputting the post number that is being replied to.

Example:  « Reply #13 on: Today at 12:10:09 PM from: Reply #7 by The Cheesy Wotsit»

Regards Juan

If someone just clicks on 'reply' how is the board software going to determine which post is being replied to?

Hi Mod,

I didn't even realise there was a reply button - just found it at the bottom; I assumed everybody used the 'quote' but then deleted all that came with it.  I'm not sure what the point of the 'reply' button is if it does not reference the post to which the reply is being made, unless it always assumes it is the OP.

Not sure if this could be done, but when you click "quote" could you have an easy way of letting people know what post you are referring to?

You mean like editing the post that you are replying to so that it only contains the relevant bit?

See that's the problem Juan..

There are way too many egos looking out for conformation of their self-centered importance on most forums.

Trumpets are blown, ignorance adhered too. Listen to me, your all talking shit..

But we sneaky ones can hold a decent conversation until they realise we ain't talking about them..

Then like "Ogres", they come stomping in demanding why we ain't talking about them.. then we just move on and let the "Ogres" poke each other.. with occasional contributions for our own amusement..

If only it was that simple.. eh!!

Hi Mod,

Perhaps like Bubbles said, we could have 3 options.  The 'quote' the same as it is now, 'Reply' which includes the post number and name you are responding to and nothing else and 'Comment' that does not reference any post (as the present 'reply').

I don't believe it should be too difficult to do for a person with reasonable coding knowledge.

I don't see any tools for changing this area of board functionality. Of course if another member has the skills to do this and is willing to volunteer their services ...........

To be honest even if this were implemented it would depend entirely on the person making the post to select an option that identified which post it was that they were replying to and if people can't be bothered to do that now I don't see how that's going to change as a consequence of them having an additional option available to them.

To my mind this is a people issue, not a technical issue, as the facility to identify which post is being replied to is already available to all, but ignored by some.

On adocument, I wanted two columns, so I found and clicked on 'left', i.e. one column to the left, a third as wide as one to right. Didn't want lines showing, but I know the column is there because when I typed a line starting from left it went to next line when it reached the width of the column.
But I can't go from left column (name) to right column on same line (for address and phone number). This is for my tap class records.

I phoned Dolphin and they tried several things on their computers which worked, but didn't seem to work on mine. Does anyone know the key/s to go from left to right columns?

I did F1 but the help menu (M/S Word 2010) is too complicated for me since it seems the help things are going to links, instead of in a nice, simple index. Grrr!

Hi Susan

Having done a few tests, it seems that the second column isn't 'created' until you get to the end of the page. Once you've got enough lines to fill the page, continuing to type will take you back up to the top of your page, but in the second column.

Think of it as having two 'pages' on one page - the second page isn't there until you've filled the first one.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a keyboard shortcut to jump between the two columns, but if you only have one page created, and have some text in the second column, Page Up and Page Down swap between the top line of the first column and the bottom line of the second column.

An easier way to have a similar layout would be to create a table with two columns, but I'm not sure how easy that is with a screen-reader.

Hope that helps

It's difficult to know what to suggest, as I'm not sure of your current level :)

One thing that might be useful for you is learning about recording macros, if you haven't already.

Basically, they let you record a series of actions in Word (or Excel, etc) and all the actions in a macro can be repeated with a user-chosen keyboard shortcut. For example, you could record inserting a table, including making the column headings bold and coloured, and then repeat that in Word at any time just by a single keyboard shortcut :)

I use them quite a lot in Excel if I want to repeat the same complex actions on a long list of data.

Does your software allow you to insert a column break?  That's the way I usually jump straight into a 2nd column without using a table.

:) I've finished 'Making Money' - I don't like the ending, as it seems to just tail off. Have collected the CD of 'Dodge' and have started a (braille) book by Sharon Penman.

I've made the font of the table bold and 48,which means I can see the phone numbers without a magnifying glass - just. And I know most of them off by heart anyway. There are three pages which I'm going to take to local shop, have them photo-copied on to thin card and hole-punched ... and another detail of my smartened-up address files will be done! :D

I can't find 'column break' in any of the doc menus. I think the software won't prevent it. I'm turning off the computer now, but if you have time, I'd be grateful for instructions as to where I'd find it.

thank you - much appreciated. I tried that and it came up with the screen I described earlier so it must be something to do with my computer and IE. I'll get tech to  check tomorrow.

For a while I have had difficulty getting the smilies to work, and couldn't use the bold, italics and fonts, but suddenly today I can use them again. Has anyone else had problems, which have been sorted without any apparent reason?

Dammit. Do the smilies still work? I'll have to fix that.

Smilies only work if you write something funny. Maybe that was your problem?

Jeremy or Gordon

today I tried, for the first time, switching the router off, then on, when the notice 'This page can't be displayed' came up. I had been going from page to page with no problem, but then between one click and the next, up comes the notice.

So as it worked once, I tried it again later this morning. I wonder if you think that could be the answer to the problem? If it is likely, I will get my local Tech chap to advise on a new router. Does that sound like a good idea?

tbh I'm not sure that would resolve the problem if your IP address was still the same, and we know that changing the IP address can work when there are access problems. I'm sure I sent an email a few weeks back for you to pass to your IT guy setting out how you could try this.

I'll check and will re-send the e-mail.

Yes, you did send an e-mail, Gordon, thank you, and yes, Ian did see it. The problem seems to be to do with SuperNova because dolphin do not work with other IPs. They are working on it, but it might take a few years yet before they have cracked that one!
Apologies if I did not send a reply.

P.S. re-sent e-mail  arrived - thank you.
