Love or Hate?

Love.

Almost every scene is lit with a black/white contrast which is cleverly done (in my view). I think it is Mitchum's best film: then there are the tattoos.

Odd to  think that it is Laughton's only film because of the reception.

I think it is a bit like 'It's a Wonderful Life' - it's reputation has grown with age. A story about Mitchum, who was self-deprecating, was he was once asked about his acting styles and he replied along the lines of 'two: with and without a horse'.  Kudos to him.
