Not while I'm still here - and I expect and hope Gabriella will  be reminding you of her presence. I rarely join political questions - I can't post fast enough, nor do I have enough interest at my time of life, but I am always interested in the tennis notes and having been a member of the BBC forum and then here, I shal remain a reader, and occasional poster, until R&E is no longer here to do so.

I still do the Saturday DT Cryptic crossword, but having become more capable of finding many of the answers, I am more inclined to leave the unanswered clues unanswered  on the CCTV and quite often find I have worked them out a day or two later.

I am also quite busy recently, keeping all three hospitals, Southampton, Lymington and Bournemouth, busy, with my health, so  my  time has become more occupied!! :)

I don't think so, but so what if it is? Anybody's welcome.

This has been discussed before. What we are mainly suffering from is ever decreasing numbers, which is not uncommon for forums like this. It is difficult to attract new numbers because the forum doesn't get "passing trade" in the way that the old BBC boards did.

In addition to this people appear to prefer the immediacy of platforms like Twitter.

Yes, we have more men than women posting but I don't think that is indicative of anything.

We are mostly over 50 I would wager as well.

One day the door will be closed quietly on this place and it will be left to the echoing voices of yesteryear. Or something like that.

As TV suggests, I think stand-alone forums like this are dying out, as everybody now uses Farcebook, Twatter, Instagram, etc.

I’m a woman. I don’t post much but I value the forum. Twitter is depressing and I don’t use Facebook or Instagram.

I'm with you on Twitter, I've tried several times to go on to the platform but I can only stand a few weeks, and then I have to leave. The hatred generated is appalling. Last time I left I decided that was it, not going back. I haven't (as yet anyway!)

FB is fine for staying in touch with friends and family, particularly if you have relatives in far-flung places. For a serious discussion, I find it more difficult as half the time I lose where my place in the thread is especially if it is a long discussion.

I know nothing of Instagram.

My take is that this place has turned into a internet hang-out for a bunch of waifs and strays who perhaps value the familiarity of keeping in touch with folk we have all 'known' for years now, and who don't tire easily of certain topics or certain people even if it gets a bit repetitive at times. I also think there is a level of camaraderie too, and I can't imagine a day when I'd no longer 'hear' what the regulars have to say. So I have to thank this place keeping me in touch with people I rather like being in touch with, and for a significant personal friendship.

For as long as I'm around, R&E will be here provided that a few of us are still prepared to turn up now and again - presumably there is still some fat that has yet to be chewed.

When the BBC forums started it seemed great and, for me, directly addressed the requirement on the BBC to support civil discussion and communication. The idea being that people could present their thoughts and opinions and discuss the merits of different arguments in an impersonal and calm way. People taking different sides on an issue would at least be able to see the logic being followed by others, and refine their own ideas if they wanted. This seemed crucial to me after 9/11 with developing crises and wars in the ME. Of course, BBC programmes could also be discussed, providing feedback and interaction to the BBC.

Unfortunately the moderation methods and cost were not taken into account and the boards had to close - those same issues currently affect most of current social media. In fact, few on them even bother to try and have reasoned discussions.

R&E followed the BBC idea and had/has good moderation but just not enough numbers and new traffic through to really make it interesting wrt. to discussion. As the numbers fall I suspect most of us left are really following or posting out of habit. We already know each others views on most stuff and the arguments have been well rehearsed.

To me it has become like the "restaurant at the end of the universe". A place to hangout, post odd quip or joke, and watch the state of the world as it slowly decomposes; will there be a show at the end, a whimper or big bang?
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

Some new people did come in every now and then but I found that they (and their views) were not welcomed. They probably thought it was better to stay away! Over the years, even some regulars were treated harshly and were either removed or they preferred to stay away.

A very minor matter. More likely to put people off, especially those with more interesting things to say. One former poster used to witter on incessantly about swearing, and I can't remember one thing that he said that was enlightening or remotely interesting. Seemed to labour under the tired old fallacy that there is some apodictic relationship between swearing and lack of intellect.
