Choosing the poet laureate.

In 1984 9r 1999, I rooted for Roger McGough: not, perhaps, Britain's greatest poet, but a gifted communicator and populariser of poetry. I was very pleased when Carol Ann Duffy, my favourite living poet, got the job in 2009, and she excelled in the role, doing much to popularise poetry by roping in other poets.

It's a very odd role
..yet good for the soul
Of the one that's selected
Perhaps though not those rejected!
