It's certainly an interesting choice for Sunak to have taken as it's not going to gain him anything internally or externally.

I guess I'm a little bit uneasy about it too. I think smoking is an obnoxious habit but I have serious reservations about banning it.

I suspect traditional smoking is largely on the way out anyway.

My biggest concern now is vaping. This was introduced, quite reasonably, as a safer alternative to traditional smoking to wean people off cigarettes. And in that respect it has been very successful.

But of course, now vapes are ruthlessly marketed to young people who never smoked traditional cigarettes and likely never would. So we have traded off a generation of addicted smokers for a generation of addicted vapers. Now vapes may be less harmful than cigarettes, but they are a lot more harmful than not vaping nor smoking.
