Not 'arf! Don J very difficult to cast though. Has to be capable of extreme lyricism and intense dramatics. It's also nice if the Carmen can dance as well as sing.

That's more musical theatre style & Carmen has translated to that quite well, Carmen Jones for example. I recall Brenda Edwards begin supurb in a production at, iirc, the RFS some years ago.
Carmen the opera is wonderful as it is.

Music theatre style or not, in the original opera when Don Jose is supposed to be looking after Carmen (who has her hands tied), she sings and dances the seguidilla, in an attempt to seduce Corporal J and to persuade him to release her.
