An "instinct" is a fixed pattern of behaviour which is demonstrated by all members of a species in response to a particular stimulus. I suspect that here you are using "instinctively" to mean something like "without comprehension" or "without showing any connection with the content of the stimulus activity".
I suspect that the great apes, which can be taught aspects of linguistic communication by means of sign language, are capable of learning conceptually but lack the ability to do so expressively.
