British TV and Radio duration records
« on: December 22, 2023, 01:34:28 PM »
World's longest running:
Soap - the Archers
TV soap - Coronation Street
Current affairs programme - Panorama
Children's TV programme - Blue Peter
Sport programme - Grandstand
Science programme - The Sky At Night
Sci-fi drama - Dr Who*
Medical drama - Casualty

Makes you proud to be British! Any others?

* not sure this counts, given the 16-year hiatus.

Don't think Grandstand can be? Been off air for years.
Does General Hospital in the US not qualify as a medical drama?
And Meet The Press in the US has been going on for longer than Panorama?

I was going largely by this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest-running_television_shows_by_category - which differentiates between News programme and Current Affairs programme. You're right - I shouldn't have included 'Grandstand', ss I was restricting it to programmes still running. You're also right about 'General Hospital': Casualty is the longest-running prime-time medical drama.

I am fascinated by the idea of the Russian comedy programme that was suspended for 14 years.

I wonder what jokes they are currently doing about Ukraine.

I'm so not into sport that I didn't realise until now that 'Grandstand' is no longer on!
