Yup, I heard that at noon today.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Lists of what is needed and a search engine to find your nearest collector (scroll to bottom for latter) are here:  http://www.twam.uk/donate-tools

Would love to know what happened there. At 81 it's certainly possible that he could still be alive somewhere. As to whether he is ....

If there is an afterlife I'm going to spend it finding out the answers to mysteries like this - Lucan, the Princes in the Tower etc.

All the evidence (snork) suggests he's gone to live with E.T.

I think you have to be of a certain age to have a clue who he is - and likewise to care.

This is a secret - but I saw him just the other day (recognised the moustache) at the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie, with rucksack, boots and all the usual kit & caboodle: I'm sure Elvis was with him.

Perhaps now we can expect a film about him?

A puppet image of Lucan featured in many Spitting Image episodes, as I remember he was depicted as a barman.

There was a very good TV drama about Lucan some time ago.  Rory Kinnear played Lucan, Christopher Eccleston played John Aspinall and was marvellously arrogant, displaying the sense of entitlement he and his circle shared.   Worth watching if you can get hold of it, ITV.

Didn't think either Kinnear or Eccleston were very convincing in that. The former didn't come across as the tall former military aristocrat Lucan was, and as for the latter's attempt at a posh accent ..... The families weren't very happy with it either I believe.

Correction - as of yesterday it should (officially) be "to have a clue who he WAS". Just another of the aristocracy who got caught shagging the nanny and ran rather than face the music!

There was never any suggestion of that going on Owlswing. Since she was murdered, not really in good taste to suggest otherwise in my view.

And the identity of Jack the Ripper. And who was actually involved in the Kennedy assassination. And what happened at the Dyatlov Pass. And how they faked the moon landings ;)

Have you read anything about the case? If Lucan did it then it was to do with him gaining custody of his children. The evidence suggests he did personnally or via a third party then fled. Nothing to do with 'shagging the nanny' as you put it. Murdering the nanny perhaps might be a correction but suggesting there was any goings on between Lucan and Sandra Rivett (she does have a name rather than just being the nanny to Lady Lucan and her children) is innacurate, in bad taste and gives no respect to Sandra Rivett. Making such allegations about people, dead or alive, can be a dangerous thing to do of course.

From what I was told, years ago when I worked in a somewhat rarefied environment where people knew about these things (or thought they did), it wasn't him who was shagging the nanny.

In any case, the poor girl died.  There's no excuse for killing someone in cold blood, no matter how provocative the situation.  If he had stayed in the country and faced the music, it might have been considered a crime of passion.

Maeght, I take your point about Christopher Eccleston's accent, I thought as much when I watched the programme but after a while I didn't notice it because it seemed, to me, that he captured the essence of John Aspinall perfectly.  I don't know much about Lucan so can't judge Kinnear on his accuracy, it seemed alright to me at the time.  Families are bound to object to portrayals of their loved ones in drama.  I am more sympathetic towards the nanny's family.

Lucan was tall, had military bearing, was charismatic and was asked to audition for the role of James Bond at one point I believ. Although Kinnear gave a decent performance I don't think it was an accurate portrayal of Lucan - but never met him of course.

I do think it is sad that Sandra Rivett is almost forgotten in the story, being referred to as 'the nanny' is an example. Her family certainly deserve a lot of sympathy, as does Lady Lucan who suffered a horrible assault. As you say, there is no excuse for cold blooded murder no matter what and trying to use it as some dig at the aristocracy is in poor taste.

You see it your way and I will see it mine.
Neither of us can prove our view one way or 'tother.

And, to be perfectly honest, I really couldn't give a damn as anyone who knew anything kept their traps shut for fear of what the aristocracy and their minions could do to anyone who spoke out!
