Okay it's an intelllectualized cozy but it's well done and until watching it recently recently with a modicum of attention, I had missed the various jokes and references that are planted, and I presume missed a lot more. But watched last weekends episode, and it underlined that Roger Allam  is one of those treasures of acting. The direction was ott but he played the last scene brilliantly

Yes it is good but I have missed an awful lot of episodes from each series. One of these days I'll catch up. Agree with you wholeheartedly about Roger Allan, he's great but I do like Shaun Evans as the young Morse.  I remember seeing him in a drama some time before Endeavour was made, playing the part of someone who turned out to be a weird baddie, and noticed the way he spoke was rather 'nasal'; in Endeavour I've not been aware of that at all, he is good & believable as Morse.

We have been watching the latest series of Endeavour, and have quite enjoyed it. However I have difficulty squaring the young Morse with the older Morse played by John Thaw.

I don't, LR.  John Thaw was great although, watching old episodes of 'Inspector Morse' recently, he didn't quite get the accent right.  That didn't matter at the time which was some years ago, one just accepted it.

Also loved 'Lewis';  like the way the writers swapped the roles, ie i'ntellectual cop' Sgt Hathaway, 'non-intellectual cop', Insp. Lewis.  I thought that worked extremely well but have seen all episodes at least twice, often three times.
