You can fly a plane at 16!

I have just seen this, I must admit I was gobsmacked.

Out of interest can any of you fly a plane?. My Dad learned to fly in in his senior years, which was a bit alarming, especially on the one flight I had with him, when he threatened to loop the loop! :o

I learned to take off and land before passing my driving test. (But before that I learned how to drive on a dirt track while on holiday in Portugal)

I learned to drive a car when I was 12, we had a large property and plenty of space around which we could drive. My eldest grandson has recently had his 17th birthday and is learning to drive on the public highway. He has been able to drive for a while as there is an off road track where they live.

I hope so too. I think it is important to know when to give up driving when one is getting on in years. I have asked my children to tell me when they think I am no longer safe to be behind the wheel. Not that I need to ask, they will remove my keys if they have any concerns.

I was very surprised that the Duke of Edinburgh was permitted to drive on the public highway at his age and state of health. It was a miracle no one was killed or seriously injured when he crashed his vehicle. I am a monarchist but I am so glad the police breath tested him as they did the other driver, they were both clear. If  the Duke is deemed to be responsible for the crash, he should be prosecuted, just like anyone else would be.

He won't necessarily be prosecuted because being responsible for a collision doesn't automatically mean you end up in court. However, if he is and he is found guilty of driving without due care and attention or worse, dangerous driving, it'll be interesting to see what sentence he gets.

Incidentally, there is precedent for convicting Royals for motoring offences - mostly Princess Anne.

Whatever the outcome I suspect The Duke won't be driving on the public highway again. I reckon his missus will have a few choice words to say about this incident, which could have had very serious consequences, if not fatal ones.
