We Need To Talk About China
« on: July 22, 2020, 11:50:58 AM »

I thought about putting this on the Trump thread as it references him but I think the politics around the relationship with China is much wider than that and involves many stories, So while this covers a couple of aspects. I think this affects so much more

This is part of the ramp up in tensions between China and the US which will pull in all nations. I fear that Trump may well use it as the defining part of his re-election campaign. That said, it's difficult to see that there is much choice here other than to stand up to China, on Hong Kong and the Uighurs

What a pity the negative political side of China tends to be emphasised.  How about a little opposition to this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QnSbT7E5I

No, It was just my reaction to how most news is portrayed today and how emotionally negative it seems to be.  It seems to have added another meaning to the expression 'No news is good news'.  If you take the title 'We need to talk about China' it seems to associate 'China' with jack booted communists hell bent on world domination and eliminating all opposition by force or thought control.  I'm not saying that there isn't a political faction dedicated to this but if you watch my link all the way through you get the sense of  Chinese people experiencing a communal inner joy which has nothing to do with politics.  However, I realise that the topic is in 'Politics and Current Affairs' and so my post was inappropriate and can be deleted.

Reminds me of a birding holiday to China I went on some years ago. We were based at a coastal resort called Beidaihe. This was the area that Mao Zedong did his infamous swim. One morning our group went along the peninsula jutting out from Beidaihe where there were interesting migrant birds to be seen. Above us, on the cliffs, was the ruling Politburo's summer retreat, which was constantly patrolled by guards. Unfortunately they saw us and two of them came down the cliffs to approach us. We were all carrying binocs, scopes and cameras, remember. We stopped and waited and our leader said the infamous words, "Pretend you don't know the language at all" to which we all happily agreed. The situation wasn't made any better by one of the guards slipping and he actually slid towards us on his arse. None of us laughed. A heated conversation took place between the guards and our leader(English, but married to a Chinese lady), the result of which we quickly hurried away. Luckily we were already slowly making our way back having seen some of the birds we wanted so no problems. We actually had a superb 3 weeks birding, meeting some very pleasant Chinese people as we wandered around paddy fields, estuaries and various pieces of woodland.

Sometimes I wish my first word was 'quote,' so that on my death bed, my last words could be 'end quote.'

I expect that one of the guards said to the other 'See how easy it is to spot British spies.  They are nothing like James Bond'.

There is nothing in the title which refers to 'jack booted communists'. The whole point of the OP is that we are in a situation where we need to talk about and be aware of the issues because it is only going to more divided in future. And some of the issues such as what is happening in Hong Kong and to the Uighurs are such that we need to defend  those rights.

But you seem to think that the treatment of the Uighurs can be ignored because of a jolly song.

(1) There is nothing in the title other than an invitation to talk about China.  Now that you have explained the whole point of the title, perhaps you could suggest how you would defend the rights of the factions you mention.

(2) No, that is you incorrectly thinking that that is my thought.

I explained the point of the title in the OP. The difficulty in doing stuff to support the rights of those in HK or the Uighurs is that it plays into the ongoing global schism between China and the US, which is in part made more problematic by the needs of Trump. Whatever we do needs the development of a strategy, ans we seem to not be talking enough about China to get one.

If all you post is a jolly song saying there are other sides to China,  then it's difficult to get what your point is. What is the significance of the  jolly song here?

I hink that we are witnessing a situation where the entity best suited to dealing with China in terms of trade, commerical interests and social development will be the EU.

The UK is now well positioned to play a major role ...
