When I was a delivery postman, in the 90s, I used to deliver to someone who was the secretary of the Penguin Collectors Society. I never did discover whether they were interested in birds, books, or biscuits.
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.
