Spotted Dick....
« on: October 10, 2021, 06:16:11 AM »
HI everyone,

Here is an article about traditionally British food that are losing their popularity.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/articles/classic_british_dishes

************

Some classic British dishes may be moving from our cookbooks to the history books, as Brits no longer recognise them, according to new research. More than a quarter of Brits have never eaten toad in the hole, with nearly one in five thinking it’s made up for fictional purposes, the research reveals. And some nursery puds may be on the way out, with 18 percent believing the old school dinner favourite spotted dick is imaginary.

Over a third of the 2000 respondents to the survey from Mortar Research, commissioned by Aldi, hadn’t tried black pudding, a British food traditionally found in a Full English breakfast.

Our love for British food may be strong, but “we need to embrace these [lesser-known] traditional British recipes before we lose them,” says Charrington-Hollins, adding “if you don’t pass recipes down, they get lost, but at the same time if recipes don’t adapt and change, they also die out.”

************

Its all about globalization and a veggie trend, I guess.

Cheers.

I think that it may be more due to the ready availability of convenience foods on supermarket shelves ...

Haven't even heard toad in the hole or eaten black pudding? Haven't lived.

I thought spotted dick was a sexually transmitted disease until I discovered Smirnoff.

At primary school, the only food on the menu that I liked was called "Queen of Puddings". It was a horrendously sweet mess of meringue (I think) and other stuff, sort of purply-pink. Jamie Oliver would have a fit of the vapours.

Bloke goes into a Glasgow bakers, points at an item, and says to the shopkeeper "is that an eclair, or a meringue?" The shopkeeper say "No, you're richt, its an eclair".
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

Lobsters and crabs are sentient beings and shouldn't be boiled alive, UK report says

Octopuses, crabs and lobsters are capable of experiencing pain or suffering, according to a review commissioned by the UK government, which has added the creatures to a list of sentient beings to be given protection under new animal welfare laws.

The report by experts at the London School of Economics looked at 300 scientific studies to evaluate evidence of sentience, and they concluded that cephalopods (such as octopuses, squid and cuttlefish) and decapods (such as crabs, lobsters and crayfish) should be treated as sentient beings.

Not bad!

I used to have a model black pudding which once graced a butchers' shop.
I kept it in case the Jehovah Witnessess  were doing the rounds. Now that restrictions have eased, I'll have to rum
midge arounf for it.
