Hmm - some front pages just don't age very well, do they. Problem for Swinney is that anytime he tries to use the 'only the SNP can beat Reform' campaigning slogan in the future he will be laughed at as this front page will be wheeled out again and again. And it makes Labour's victory even more impressive as I'm sure there will have been some voters swayed by the message in the run up to this by-election.

Help us out please Gonners - what on earth do you mean?

Where I'm originally from being a bluenose meant being an Everton support, and likely a catholic. But I suspect your meaning is different.

You have to admire the cynicism of Labour using the 'Ulsterisation' of Scottish politics.

Ah yes, I thought that might be the case, but thought I'd check.

Yup - although the sectarian divide is way less evidence in the Liverpool teams these days, but that's the history. Same in Manchester - United historically the catholic side, City the protestant one.

You have to admire the cynicism of Labour using the 'Ulsterisation' of Scottish politics.
Context and detail please.

Presumably 'ulsterisation' means sectarian (as most of politics in NI is) - in other words a party that represents and attracts largely or only from either the protestant or catholic communities.

Struggling how this applies at all to Labour - I gather (from what you've said) that Davy is a protestant. But his leader in scotland is a muslim. And Labour is a Britain-wide party with their overall leader being non religious and his chancellor and foreign secretary are anglican and his education secretary is catholic. Their elected politician with the largest personal mandate is muslim and the second largest is catholic (and a bluenose in a scouse sense).

Dear Prof,

No, I fully understand what Sane is talking about, Larkhall mentality, the Labour party played a blinder, win at all costs, an old Scottish joke, what the guys a Muslim, ah but is he a protestant Muslim or a Catholic Muslim :'(

Here's a wee Larkhall folk song they sing to the babies.

PS: I knew about the united and city thing but I suppose I should have guessed at the Everton and Liverpool thing, oh dear!
