A damaged piece of type in a 1944 edition of the King James version changed the depressing commandment “Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands” to the far more exciting “in the same way submit yourselves to your owl husbands”, raising the prospect of a whole new world of ornithological encounters.

Well it amused me.  :o

I do wish he/she would change that name or at least put an apostrophe in there before the "s". I can't get the picture of someone swinging an owl around out of my head.

The OP goes well with "Thou shalt commit adultery" as well. See http://www.premier.org.uk/News/UK/400-year-old-Bible-encouraging-adultery-set-to-sell-for-15-000. I realise that this is in the OP, but if anyone has £15,000 spare...

It would make a good Avatar

OK, that's better. At least I can fix that in my brain rather than some madman holding an owl by its feet and swinging it around his head.

We don't expect or need apostrophes in names.

If my husband expected me to submit to him, he would be hanging by his dangly bits from the nearest steeple! ;D

I suppose it would depend on what the English word meant when it was first used to translate the original wording.  Do we even know whether the original means what 'submit' means today?

Well then. If "sub" means under and "mit" has any relation to the French mettre, then it means to be placed under - I suppose that means only using the missionary position.

There are Christians who believe just that.

S, I see that you stop with a word that is already translated from a different language.  Rather like one of Bart Ehrman's "many mistakes and changes that can be found throughout the Bible" -

The King James Bible was based on inferior manuscripts that in many cases do not accurately represent the meaning of the original text.

There are Christians who believe just that.
And there are non-Christians who believe just that, Rhi.  Even ones who have never come into contact with Christianity.

Assuming that's true, they don't believe it solely because of a Bible quote.

That might be an interesting thing to know, but religion is what people do - it's far more telling what people believe it means now. If there is a significant difference, it would be another vote in support of updating the translations for modern readers.

O.

You are right, whatever the original meaning was. It is mindboggling to think that even in the 21st century there are those who think the guy should be head of the family and the females should kow tow to them! :o

Its also mindboggling to think that, even in the 21st century, there are those who believe that men and women can survive independently of each other.
