I think I was more stunned by this morning's death of Cliff Michelmore at the age of 96 than I was at that of Paul Daniels. Perhaps the recent news of PD's terminal illness took a bit of the edge off that news, but yet again Cliff Michelmore was one of those who was a shining light as I grew up. My commiserations go out to his family.

I remember him so well from my youth.

Mine too. Hell of a good age though.

He did well to live so long. I enjoyed his programmes when I was younger, and young. There was one on the radio at weekends, I think it was called, ''Family Favourites'', and he hosted it with his wife, Jean Metcalf; I remember listening to that with my parents, we were always sitting around the table when it was on so it was probably lunch time. Then there was a 'Tea time' programme on TV, similar I suppose to 'The One Show', which featured Cy Grant, a musical theatre star who always did a calypso rounding the programme off (he lived to 90!). Cliff Michelmore was quite an engaging character, very popular.

He also had a very dry wit - some of the things he said - on and 'off'-air when things went wrong would often require a double-take to fully appreciate.

One of those whose face you never forget. What a wonderful innings. RIP.
