The Ashes test series is due to start on Thursday.
Given the batting frailties of both sides I predict no match will last more than four days and Australia will edge the series because their batting problems are not as bad as ours.

Good job the tickets I've got are for the 2nd day of the Oval test ;)

Looks like England will avoid following on.
-
Looks like there's nothing left for England but bat the day out and go for thw draw.
-
So there was the inevitable England collapse. Not looking good at all.
-
This was also the first test in the Test World Championship

Steve Smith is out of the third test

I completely missed most of what went on in the second test seeing as I was at a festival with very bad 4G coverage. I gather Joffra Archer caused a few problems (including Steve Smith's head injury).

I didn't watch any (no Sky) but listened to loads on the radio. The feeling was that Jofra Archer is a genuine star - a debut like nothing the commentators had seen in a long time. He had one spell (that included the Smith injuries - there were two) which appeared to be about as hostile as anything seen for a very long time.

6-45 - it gets better.

Can England get to 100?
-
Can they get to 70?
-
Can they get to 70?
No.
-
That's just embarrassing.
-
Wow!
-
I just turned on Five Live Sports Extra - that was very exciting, wasn't it?
-
i Thought i’d Never witness another match like Headingly 81. Unbelievable.
-
If that had been scripted, no one have believed it. Specsavers are giving Jack Leach free glasses for life at Stokes's suggestion.
-
A New Zealander (on IS) was saying that the Ashes should be kept in NZ since Stokes was from that country! I've no idea if there is any basis for that!

Sure he was born in NZ, but came to England when he was 12, so pretty legitimately English as he's played all his career here. He isn't one of these players who qualified by residency as a professional.
And no they can't have the ashes - only England or Australia can.
-
England batsmen are shit.

England batsmen are shit.
Actually so are the Australian batsmen, with one rather obvious exception.
-
Well that wraps it up for another two years.
Steve Smith versus England has been a bit of a let down.

That's about it really. Restored a bit of pride today but Smith made the difference for the Aussies. Shame really because those Aussies are a bunch of mouthy shites.

So would I be if we won the Ashes in Australia.

Good to see that England didn't lose the series, although failed to regain the ashes.
Had the good fortune to be at the Oval on Friday - great day's play with Jofra's 6 wickets.
One thing struck me though - the 'squad numbers' the players have on their backs are completely random, seem to bear no resemblance to anything I can fathom. Anyone know how these numbers are determined?

The players choose them

So I see - I get the Root 66, but no idea about the other numbers. So many seem to be high numbers too, and completely random. Just about the only one which seemed to make sense was Broad, number 8 - but that must be him nostalgically looking back to the days when he was considered an all-rounder!!

You can choose any number between 1 and 100 that isn't already in use. Presumably, they usually have personal significance for the players.
I'm guessing Stuart Broad's 8 refers to his figures of 8-15 at Trent Bridge in 2015.

I guess so, although it would be interesting to know what those reasons might be - we know about Root, but why:
Leach - 77
Buttler - 63
Archer - 12
Smith - 49
A mystery to me.

Aha - maybe so - or perhaps his recent batting average ... hmm then again that would be Warner!
