I came across this on another forum and thought it might go well on R&E. You ask a question, someone answers it and comes up with a question of their own.
What is your favourite colour? Mine is blue.
-
Red. How did you vote in the last general election?
-
Labour.
Do you object to revealing your age, and have you ever lied about it? My answer is no, I have no problem answering the question truthfully. I am 72 years young. :)

No to the first, yes to the second when I went into pubs, and bought alcohol when underage.
If you could have a drink with any novelist, alive or dead, who would it be?
-
George Orwell, my first literary hero.
What is the frthest North, South, East and Wesr you've ever been? Me: N & W, Portree, Skye; S & E, Lake Maggiore, Italy.
-
Scotland, Guernsey, Austria, Anglesey.
Have you ever been in an emergency situation on the plane in which you were travelling? I have, I was flying back to the UK from Guernsey where I had been on holiday when we flew into the eye of a storm. The small plane was rocking all over the place. The staff were obviously scared stiff, and the pilot told us to put on our seat belts and hope for the best. Fortunately we landed safely.

D H Lawrence - I remember, in my late teens, I came across 'Sons and Lovers', which made a huge impressions on me at that time. I must re-read it to see if it still does.
In terms of travel - planes or boats (planes for me)?

I hate boats: had a rough crossing of the Irish Sea in 1958 (I was 6) and it still haunts me to this day. I'm re-reading Great Expectations right now.
BBC News, ITV News, C4 News or Sky News?

My Dad liked Perry Como. I remember 'Magic Moments'.
Have you ever had in your possession something really weird?
When I was a kid in the early 60s a small plane crashed into one of our fields, my father and his staff went to see what they could do to help. Sadly the pilot and co-pilot were dead, the passengers were alive, but hurt. When my sisters and I got home from school we went to look at the crash site, the policeman guarding the site let us through the cordon when we explained our father owned the field. He didn't object to us taking some pieces of wreckage as souvenirs! :o That would be not permitted today!

My maternal grandmother died in 1973 and when we were clearing out her stuff we came across a couple of wartime gasmasks that were specifically for children - in this case my mother and her sister, Jenny. Although the gasmasks themselves weren't unusual the weirdness, for me anyway, was that the risk of children being poisoned by gas was a given in the west of Scotland when my mother and aunt were schoolgirls.
Sauce-wise - HP or Tomato?
-
Neither of them.
Have you ever been one a zipwire? I did a few years ago.
-
Yes, at a local adventure park, when my kids were small.
Have you ever seen the current prime minister in the flesh? Back in 1964, when I turned 13, Sir Alec Douglas-Home came to Stockport and urged the crowd to vote Tory. Happily, not enough people did, and he became one of the shortest-serving P.M.s in history, at just under a year. (We also got Wislon, but I missed him.)
-

As a kid, yeah. When I was in the scouts, I think.
Has anyone here done military service? I moved to Finland so I could do my national service. Spent a year in the army and became an NCO. Now I'm a reservist. There were times when I thought "what have I got myself into, I wish I was back home" but it was one of the best years of my life and got me out of a rut.

Seen him, talked to him, multiple times 35 years ago. Dangerous narcissistic prick then and now.
When were you happiest?

I take it you mean Johnson. Apologies - my question was ambiguous. I meant the person who was pm at the time that you saw them.
In the early 70s, when I was in love and in lust* with my future (now, sadly, late) wife. I got a huge buzz from walking down the street with her holding my arm for guidance, her white cane in her other hand, and describing what was going on around us.
*(c) Sue Townsend, in one of her Adrian Mole books.
Have you ever been injured in a road accident?
I was knocked off my bike by a motorcyclist in 2014, and spent nine weeks in hospital, with a broken left collarbone and right heel bone, but the £20,000 I eventually got as compensation made it almost worth it!
-
No I have never been injured in a road accident.
Do you spend more on your children than yourself? Apart from essentials my husband and I don't need to spend much on ourselves so prefer to help our kids out. It is now that they need it not waiting until we kick the bucket.
-
No.
Islay or Speyside? Me - Islay, especially Laphroaig

Do you have a smart TV and is it fixed to the wall or on a table? Ours is on a coffee table and 42" long we wouldn't want it any larger.
-
No. I haven't even got a scruffy tv. What little tv I watch, I watch on iplayer on my laptop.
-
Steve you forgot to ask a question!
Do you have a dishwasher, or do you wash the dishes by hand? When our dishwasher packed up l decided not to bother buying another, it only takes me a couple of minutes or so to wash up nowadays.
-
Dishwasher.
What was the most boring and forgettable theatre trip you ever had?

I have only been to the theatre once, years ago, I am not sure what is was I saw, but I was bored stiff.
Do you prefer to go to the cinema, or watch a film on your own device at home? I much prefer to watch one at home.
-
By hand.
Guardian or Telegraph? Me - Grauniad. I wouldn't be seen dead reading the Torygraph.
-
We haven't taken a newspaper for many years, but when we did in was The Times.
Do you have your milk delivered by the milk person, or buy it from the supermarket? I buy mine.
-

Tony Benn said you should read a paper that opposes your political views.

Buy it. I live in a block of flats.
My question:
How did you come to support your favourite football (or other sport/activity) team?
When I was eight, my best friend said we had to support a football team. He was wearing a red and white track suit top at the time, so we picked Arsenal.
-
I don't support any team or any sport.
Back to my previous question, which wasn't answered.

As a kid I lived in East Ham so it was easy for me. West Ham became my team. Upton Park was only a 10 minute walk away. And I vaguely remember 1980 FA Cup, but seeing as you're an Arsenal fan I won't say anymore about that ;)
Has anyone here ever eaten khachapuri? It's a Georgian cheese filled bread. Was thinking of trying to make it over the weekend.
-
Recioe: first, catch a puri..
No, I haven't. Sounds nice, though.
Have you ever drunk kopi luwak? It's the world's most expensive coffee, made from palm civet shit (well, sort-of). I haven't, but would love to try it.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_luwak

I tried some on holiday in Bali. However, after having tasted maybe a dozen different coffees, I could no longer discern any differences between them.
Haven't we had a topic/thread just like this before?

Yes it was. My answer was "buy it".

My turn again: what band past or present that you haven't seen would you most like to see live?
Mine is Talking Heads.
-
What was the most boring and forgettable theatre trip you ever had?
Dunno, I've forgotten. :-X
If you had to have a hand made of ham or an armpit dispensing cream OR an armpit made of ham and a hand dispensing sun cream, which would you prefer?
If you had to.
(Partially RHerring)
-
No.

The Who - could still go and see them now but really would have wanted to see them in their prime.
Tea with milk - milk in first then tea, or tea first then milk. Does it make a difference if you are making tea in a tea pot or just using a tea bag in a single cup?
-
You can not make tea with a tea bag in a cup, only slightly discoloured water. Proper tea is made with loose-leaf tea in a pot, and brewed for five minutes before pouring. Anarchists use a tea-bag in a mug, because they believe that proper tea is theft. As for milk first or last - either is acceptable. I put it in first, but George Orwell was an advocate for last.
Who put the ram in the rama-lama-ding-dong?

Was it Ewe?
-
Was it Ewe?
No not me.
Have you ever seen two squirrels fighting? I did the other day, when on my early morning walk, they were really giving each other a good hammering. I wondered if I should have supplied them with boxing gloves. ;D
-
No.
Have you ever seen a red squirrel in the wild? I have, once, more than 50 years ago, at Alderley Edge in Cheshire. I dare say our Scottish members have, since I believe the greys have never made it into Scotland or the far North of England.
-
I have never seen a red squirrel. We see less grey squirrels than we used to do, at one time we would see them several times a day. I still giggle when I remember one cheeky squirrel banging on our patio door at our previous property. I guess it was trying to inform me that the bird table, from which it liked to pinch the goodies I put out for the birds, was empty. I replenished it, and the squirrel was soon munching away again happily. ;D
Have you ever had a newt come into your house? One came into our sunroom a few years ago.

Can't say I've ever had a newt come into the house. Has anyone seen a hawk catch its prey in the flesh, so to speak? I was going to work one morning a few years ago and I heard some gulls making a real racket. I thought, what's this? I looked around and saw a hawk catch a pidgeon for its breakfast. I even managed to take a photo.
-
I have seen sparrow hawks catch prey on a number of occasions.
Do you see many live badgers?
I only ever saw one live badger when living at our previous home, all the others were roadkill.

Never seen one in centre of Glasgow, though for many years now, foxes are common.
Do you have a phobia of any animals?

Rats and mice do my head in!
Do you have any other phobias?
I am phobic where thunderstorms are concerned. I have been since I was a child, and I was nearly struck by lightning some years ago!

Coulrophobia- fear of clowns, which means the last PM and this new one have been 'triggering'.
If your house was on fire what is the one thing i.e. not a person or animal, that you would save?
-

My Fender Telecaster guitar.
Which is most miserable to endure for days on end: rain or snow?
-
Both are miserable, but snow is the worst as it prevents me from driving.
If someone was being attacked would you try to defend them? It is the sort of thing I would probably do now, even in my dotage. Years ago I rescued an elderly bag lady who was being attacked by youths.
-
I hope I'd have the nerve to. I did once remonstrate with a drunken thug who was shouting at and verbally threatening an equally drunken young woman, who was crying.
Have you ever made sauerkraut? I regularly make my own, having discovered it in my mid-60s. I'd never eaten it before, but now I always have some home-made available, and love it, the sourer the better.
-
I haven't, and my cookery skills are non-existant - I've tried cooking from a recipe but it usually results in a devastated kitchen and confusion regarding multiple ingredients (a teaspoon of this or a tablespoon of that, and what does 'finely sliced' actually mean!). I'm ok with toast and putting cereal in a bowl though.
When wearing shorts and sandals is it persmissible to also wear socks?

If it's not in Leviticus it's permissible.
What is the Capital of Mongolia.

I don't know. I've never worn sandals and I never will. Never liked them. Shorts I rarely wear. They make me feel half naked and then there's the problem of where to put your wallet, change, keys, phone etc without feeling your shorts are going to fall down from the weight. No! That's no good.
Sourkraut was mentioned earlier which got me thinking, do you like pickled eggs? I love them but I still only eat them quite rarely, usually when I go back to England and I'll one with my fish and chips
-
When wearing shorts and sandals is it persmissible to also wear socks?
Harold says no.
Not keen on pickled eggs.
-
What is the Capital of Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar. (or M, if you like schoolboy jokes.)
Does your chewing-gum lose its flavour on the bed post overnight?
-
No to socks with sandals.
Yes to pickled eggs.
Not sure about the chewing gum, will give it a go one day ;)
Have you been up in a hot air balloon? I have
as a 60th birthday present.

Tea with milk - milk in first then tea, or tea first then milk. Does it make a difference if you are making tea in a tea pot or just using a tea bag in a single cup?
Milk in first if pouring from a pot. Hot water in first if using a teabag in a cup. Ideally it would be milk in first in all cases, but putting the milk in first in a cup with a teabag stops the water from being hot enough.
