Title: Advertising jingles that are embedded
Post by: Nearly Sane on June 24, 2025, 01:37:33 PM
I was rewatching Equus the other day, where the character of Alan Strang uses advertising jingles to respond to questions from his psychiatrist, notably Double Diamond Works Wonders. I was thinking that it's a brilliant concept, but wonder if Peter Shaffer understood that thise jingles would still be embedded in so many memories so long after they appeared. I still occasionally think of catching the Bass Special, or watching John Collier's window, and was wondering what other advertising jingles are stuck in people's brains?

One that sticks in my mind is the 'Um Bongo' cartoon advert from, I'm guessing the late 1970's - I seem to recall that "they drank it in the Congo".

It was probably overtly racist - doubt it would be shown today.

"This is luxury you can afford by Cyril Lord". I don't think I've been able to afford that luxury, by Cyril Lord or anyone else.
"Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water"
And one very dear to my heart, though it does not refer to my home county, and in fact the logo should be spelt "Coate's" which is not quite my handle:
"Coates comes up from Somerset, where the cider apples grow"

Gave me the horrors, that one. The lady apparently had a cold, as if that were any excuse. Don't remember where I heard that bit of trivia.

I am at present in Nailsea, the very town where Mr. Coate used to live.

R White's lemonade.
I know it, but it was regional like a lot of lemonade ads. It wasn't till I moved to London, and people would sing it it that I was aware of it. Written and sung by Elvis Costello's bad, with backing vocals from Elvis (Declan as was)
