My father for some reason couldn't stand him so the show was rarely on in our house.

I didn't mind him, but I'm not sure about all this greatest interviewer lark.

I remember the Helen Mirren interview where he was made to look a right plonker - deservedly so.

A lot of the time, especially later on in his career, he seemed quite content for people to just do their thing as he sat back and laughed/admired etc.

I'm not saying there isn't some skill needed to let these personalities shine, I'm just not sure that any attempt was made to get any closer to the real person.

Having said all that it was a fixture of Saturday evenings that I enjoyed and he, in part, made that happen.
