Off-road in Ashridge, and Ivinghoe Beacon
« on: May 02, 2020, 03:55:21 PM »
Excellent 31-mile ride, partly off-road in the Ashridge estate, plus a short walk to the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon. Very few infernal congestion engined vehicles around - there is something to be said for lockdown.

Lovely photos Steve and an area I know well. Just a bit too far for me to be able to justify on a bike on lock down I think.

It was a bit over the official limit, I must admot, but the maximum time of an hour is no good for bikes - you can't have a proper bike-ride in an hour or less. Given that I didn't ride out and back in a straight line, I can't have got more than 12 miles or so from my house, and social distancing is easy on a bike, so I think I behaved responsibly enough.

I wouldn't worry about it. People tend to lose sight of the ultimate aim and fixate on the letter of the law. Three weeks ago I went on a walk but part of our planned route was shut so we had to take a detour. We ended up taking an hour and a half. Nobody arrested us. Nobody got COVID19 and the sky didn't fall in.

There is no official time limit for exercise. I don't know where the one hour idea originated.

The government website says: There is no limit on how long you can exercise for, but you should spend as short a time away from your home as possible. Stay local if you can and act responsibly at all times.

You can also exercise more than once a day and drive to a place of exercise as long as the exercise/drive balance is in favour of the exercise. You can even stop for a picnic lunch, again as long as the picnic isn't the dominant activity.

The government has certainly given out mixed messages on this, leading to confusion and misunderstanding, but it has at least tried to recognise the value of exercise and that not everyone's circumstances are the same, so people have to make their own judgements and act reasonably. The important thing is to maintain social distancing and to avoid getting yourself into a scrape that might require others to come to your rescue.

There was a poll not long back that claimed about 40% of the public said they were OK with having a total exercise ban under lockdown. This turns out to be almost identical to the proportion of us who take no exercise at all. I wonder whether these are the same folk.

For many of us exercise out of doors is not just a luxury, it's absolutely essential to keep sane. So keep cycling and enjoying your trips without guilt. Nice pics!

Sorry I think others have misinterpreted my comment.

I didn't mean that Steve should do this bike ride in lock-down - indeed I've previous said that I think cycling is excellent exercise in lock-down and low risk to others.

Steve and I live close to each other - I'm in St Albans - all I meant was that for me I didn't think I'd have the time (or probably the energy) to cycle to Ivinghoe and Ashridge - they are a touch further for me than they are for Steve.

Indeed - it'd be an extra 8-10 miles.

Exactly - bit too far for me to contemplate.

Plenty of good shortish rides around St Albans, though - Markyate, Flamstead, Redbourn, etc.
