I suspect that in the US their flag is probably a statement of their patriotism: where that does seem to be a distinct part of their culture, whereby they sing their national anthem at the drop of a hat, whilst holding a hand over their heart.

I've always had an antipathy to flags of any sort. I think this was instilled in me by my father, who had no time for any displays of nationalism or patriotism.

I remember being astounded on my first visit to the USA in 1981 that my very liberal American friend had a flagpole with the Stars and Stripes duly attached to it in her front garden. It made me feel quite uneasy, as do the White/red combos that keep popping up with alarming regularity nowadays.

I had thought that the UK was, on the whole, more sensible about flags than the USA. Another of my internal myths has been fully demolished.
As mentioned earlier, coming from the West of Scotland, there has often been more flag waving than elsewhere in the UK. I have to admit that because of that I fing Gonzo's attitude a little surprising. The sectarian overtones of the various flags makes me viscerally react to the sight. That said, i feel like I understand the attitude mo. There is a lot of fear and confusion in those waving them. Some of that may well be xenophobia, but to an extent that xenophobia has a rationale, and is backed up by other fears, around lack of control.

it's worth remembering that there are still issues in the US with the Confederate flag, and its meaning. I think the attempt at healing following their civil war, plays into a more open attempt at unity.

As noted in my reply to Aruntraveller, our own more recent links to forms of civil war, I think makes it harder to unify under one flag. Overlay that with the connection to empire and the issues of race, there makes the Union flag odd, and that we have the multitude of flags for the countries, and there is a weird difficulty in seeing it as just patriotism. Unless of course you are Keir Starmer with your wee flag room.

tbh I hate to see UK politicians wrap themselves in the Union flag, mainly as a regular backdrop: not all of us in the UK find that to be a look we approve of. It also seems to me that the current use of the Union flag is replaying the madness and xenophobia of Brexit.

I have a visceral distaste for both the Union Jack and the UK national anthem, though to be fair both are easily avoided.

It may be inchoate rage, but in some ways it may be caused by lies from politicians?

I meant specifically the idiots putting up St George flags in Wales.

Dear Sane,

Gonzo's altitude :o What is Gonners attitude, feck knows ???

I see one side saying if you raise the flag of your country you are a racist and a fascist, I honestly don't think I am either of those two, but I may be wrong.

I see flag wavers angry at immigrants being put up in hotels and telling me that we have veterans and homeless on the street, why are we putting migrants in hotels, newsflash we had veterans on the street and homeless way before we had the influx of migrants, where was your anger then, wankers!

But I see this flag waving as a catalyst, do something about the homeless, do something about the veterans and stop putting migrants in hotels it is just adding fuel to the fire.

To end, I also want to see an end to a NHS Nurse or Doctor trying to help a new born baby when Mum and Dad can't speak a word of English, almost every single day I see this, thin end of the wedge, maybe this is the real reason I want to raise my Union Jack.

Gonnagle.
I will now read posts very carefully and then using the two God given brains cells that I have reply as if I am talking to a two year old, yes that should suffice as a gentle reminder✝️✝️✝️❤️

The attitude that flag waving doesn't have a long history of xenophobia, hate, and sectarianism in the West of Scotland but is just a harmless pastime. And the attitude that glides over the violence in the protests as if it doesn't happen. The attitude that has skipped over the attacks on the police in London yesterday.

Dear Sane,

Good morning Sir :) Where to begin, firstly no one is gliding over the violence, I am certainly not, I condemn the violence and our Prime Minister is condemning the violence in fact the violence is the headline, the focus ( well it was yesterday, headline today is some prick called Mandelson ) Mr Starmer is making big about our national flags being stolen by the ones resorting to violence, a minority, are all flag wavers brick throwing thugs, are they? this is what the press would have you believe.

The flag wavers are being ignored or vilified, but not by the Farages of this world, they are rubbing their hands in glee, as I go about my ordinary humdrum life I am meeting ordinary people just like myself who are in full agreement with the flag wavers.

To end and only because you mentioned the word, sectarianism, strange thing is a certain group in Glasgow who would choke at seeing the Union Jack flying are actually agreeing with the flag wavers :o

At mo point did you actually mention the violence, and that is gliding over it. You referred to the waving of flags as if it was all peaceful,,it isn't and hasn't been. Standing with the flag wavers as you stated you do, without dealing with that is glossing over it.

And Glasgow and the West of Scotland has suffered a surfer of flags for too long, from too many on different sides of the political divide for it just to be the innocent pastime you are portraying it as. This is not new.

The first time I was punched by someone carrying a flag, I was 10 and wearing the 'wrong' school uniform. The flag was the red hand of Ulster one. Now while I admit that those and other incidents over the last 50 years have soured me against flag wavers, that antipathy is not sectarian, as just as many pricks on either side of flag waving divides

Dear Sane,

as just as many pricks on either side of flag waving divides

Correct, and the trick as I see it is to listen to both sides of the non prick divide or maybe, just maybe listen to the pricks to.

The one not wanting to be punched one, and the one that has seen peopke talk about flag waving being just an innocent pastime my entire life, and how it's just a minority but on participating in the flag waving giving cover for the ones that punch.

What does the 10 year old me do in that situation, oh Socratic one? Say 'I feel your pain'? Because I fucking didn't I felt mine.

ETA - I did listen to him as well. So well that over 59 years later, I can tell you he said 'wee fenian cunt'

Dear Sane,

Well lets call it Karma, I think I was about 12 years old at the time, 41 bus to Ehouse, I was wearing my blue white and red scarf minding my own business when a rather inebriated old fenian cunt boarded the Bus and proceeded to give me dogs abuse, I think I was saved from actual physical harm by two Glasgow wifies ( God Bless Glasgow wifies ) telling him to sit down and mind his language, happily he got off two stops later where I then proceeded to give him the vicky, funny the memories we keep from our childhood 8)

The patriotism good, nationalism bad idea is the sort of simplistic circular approach which politics is filled with. Anyway Tim's up to fight for the flag
