Edmund's loss in China means Evans is very close to being the the new UK Men's No 1 player. Possibly not likely to happen here, but looking strongly likely after Shanghai Masters.

Big win for Murray - many people will not have heard of Berrettini, but currently ranked 13th, in 8th place in the ATP Race, and semi finalist at the US Open last month. The win means he plays the British number 3, Norrie, in the next round.

Have you been watching it? How does Murray look? Really well and enjoying the action? I do hope so.

Haven't seen today's match. In the one with Berrettini, he looked strong, but still not anywhere near his best. But he is definitely getting better as he plays

And Murray beaten in straight sets by Thiem. Not really a surprise. If Zverev beats Querrey, then Thiem is the oldest man left in the draw.

Big match coming up in the women's draw in China with Andreescu and Osaka. Difficult one to call. Osaka looking likes she has returned to form, but Andreescu probably the form player of the last 3 months. 2 current Slam title holders.

And looking at the points in the WTA rankings, looks very likely with Pliskova and Svitolina being knocked out earlier than Barty that she will finish the year ranked No 1.

Nadal pulls out of Shanghai. He doesn't have any points to defend in the rest of the year, and on current numbers would finish ranked No. 1 but Djokovic has a good chance of closing that up a bit by end of Shanghai, leaving it a battle in Paris and London for the number 1 spot for end of year. Given past records in those, Djokovic would be favourite.

So Edmund's 'reign' as UK's number 1 is over, or will be when the new rankings are issued at the end of Shanghai Masters, after his loss today. He will certainly be passed by Evans who was knocked out in qualifying, and would be passed by Norrie, if Norrie (who had a good win against Simon today) wins his next match. Evans will be No. 1 for the first time unless Norrie gets to the semi final - which would count as a huge shock.

Murray's win against Londero moves him up to No 242 in the world provisionally.

Murray officially stating his intention to play the Australian Open - don't think that will be a huge surprise but will be interesting to see how his fitness works over 5 set matches.

Having done a thread on possible retirements at the end of next year, I should have noted previously that Kim Clijsters is unreunretiring and should be playing in the Australian Open at the age of 36.

Both Murray, and Norrie lose, though Murray went to final set tie break against Fognini which is good progress. This means Dan Evans who didn't qualify for Shanghai will become UK's No 1 man. Incidentally had Murray won the Shanghai Masters, he would have become UK No 1.

Gauff breaking into the top 100, which is amazing, but there is a cautionary tale in the story, Karatantcheva.

Djokovic, Federer, Fognini beaten by Tsitsipas, Zverev, Medvedev - is there a changing of the guard at last?

And Berettinni beats Thiem so the four younger players won! All under 25.

Heather Watson through to final in Tianjin. Her first WTA final in 3 years. After a dreadful year, this has been a strong return to form.

Murray beats Cuevas pretty impressively. Also Jannik Sinner has a very impressive win against Monfils, there definitely seems to be a growth in the younger players.

Murray makes the final and will play Wawrinka. 6 slams between them. If Wawrinka wins he's back in the top 16 returning from injury. And after all the good stuff done by the younger generation last week and Sinner this week, another final between two over thirties.

Wawrinka beats Tiafoe to set up quarter final as the Basel Open with Federer - but then withdraws through injury.
