Part of me finds some of the comments that Grey-Thompson received shocking, but then not really - we still have a long way to go as regards disability.

I can't begin to think why a stranger would go up to a pregnant woman and make such a comment even if she did appear disabled. For all she knew the woman could have had an accident but it's none of her business anyway.

There's no reason to suppose that someone who can't get around as easily as most of us but is still mobile and sensible, is unable to look after a baby and child. For goodness sake, blind people have babies and manage quite well.

Spina bifida varies, some people do not have a severe disability as a result of it, it can be mild. It's detectable in utero and can be repaired in many cases. People who have spina bifida or in their family are advised to take prescribed high dose of folic acid before trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy, it helps to prevent a foetus from developing the condition. Tanni G-T would almost certainly have done all that and her child is fine. She's also quite obviously a capable woman & had she not been, she wouldn't have had a baby.

I hope the woman who said that reads the article and eats her words.
