Seems like an outbreak of patriotism in England, with perhaps some underlying politics in the background.

A couple have appeared near me. My initial reaction was annoyance as I was associating them with Reform types - which is a sad reaction to seeing our flag. We seem to be moving more towards American culture with this and moving away from traditional Englishness - which is ironic.

I think this is part of the problem. The sight tends to make one think massive racist fuckpuffin in splashcuba's flow chart. Probably even more so for the awest of Scotland it tends since to be flown for sectarian reasons here, though possibly the red hand of Ulster is even more indicative of that. Indeed we have lots of fun with flags here. Adding in the Irish flag, and the Palestinian flag with all the others.

It turns out little Yvette Cooper is the flag shagger in chief:

https://www.thepoke.com/2025/09/02/yvette-cooper-so-many-flags-home-23-funniest-responses/

Currently, this is the best response I've seen:

Oh god. The politicians are actually having a Union Jack-off.

Let our bodies be twisted but never our minds

Dear Maeght, ( morning mate :P )

Traditional Englishness! What exactly is that?

As for this flag waving stuff :) I love it, but would prefer more of the good old St George, St Andrew and St Patrick flag, the good old Red White and Blue ;)

Gonnagle the Flag Shagger :P

I will now read posts very carefully and then using the two God given brains cells that I have reply as if I am talking to a two year old, yes that should suffice as a gentle reminder✝️✝️✝️❤️

Traditionally reserved and understated in displaying patriotism. Of course that only goes back a certain way into the past!

Basically, we generally aren't ones to have flags everywhere like they do in America.

Dear Maeght,

Thank you for the clarification and this is exactly what I have always thought, I am British dontcherknow or I am English dontcherknow, a quiet reservation about who and what they are, no need for banner or flag waving but I think at this time at this very moment in history there is a case for saying hang on old chap it is nice to welcome fellow humans who are suffering but lets not forget we have a duty of care to our own.

The flag wavers and shouters at hotels have a point and as long as it is peaceful protest I will stand shoulder to shoulder with them, just wondering where in Glasgow to hang my Union Jack :P

Gonnagle flag waver extraordinaire.

Would Jesus have waved a flag and shouted at a hotel?

Some local wanker or group of wankers have turned a local zebra crossing into a red-crossing, and hung a union jack from the light post.

When I were nobbut a lad, the Scottish anthem was 'Scotland the Brave'. which is jolly and stirring. Why it was change to this dreary dirge is anyone's guess.

There isn't an official one. Scotland the V
Brave used to break played at the Comminwralth Games up till 2020 when FoS replaced it, in part because it had become the de facto anthem at other occasions like rugby internationals. I dislike both songs but you are right that FoS is a dirge. Before Scotland the Brave, Scots Wha Hae was used which which is also dirgelike.
The only other main contender is Highland Cathedral which is an ok tune but has no words - though i am not opposed to the idea of.

Dear H,

Because!! BECAUSE!! We are Scottish :P and a favourite pastime of us Jocks is to poke a sharp stick in the eye of the English, we cannae help it, it's in the blood even if you are a die hard Unionist like myself ( well mostly ??? ) and if you look at the lyrics to the song

And stood against him
Proud edward's army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

We are doing just that ;)

I was for a while not a fan of Flower of Scotland until I discovered that it was written by one of my Heroes a Mr Roy Williamson ( who is sadly not with us anymore :( RIP Roy ) who was one part of a famous Scottish duo "The Corries" who kind of revitalised Scottish folk back in the seventies, Mr Williamson also wrote Scotland will Flourish but that doesn't have a go at the English, well it does but in a very back handed sort of way ;)

Anyway ;D

PS: And of course https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBSTYiHg0aE
I was discussing the flag phenomenon over the weekend with my brother and my nephew and what we thought was the most appropriate response. We came up with:

a). Simply ignore them and it will all (literally) blow over - my response.

b). Add 'Welcome's all' to each flag - my brother.

c). Head out at night and remove them - my nephew

And as the whisky flowed we added two more.

d). Place a pirate flag above/below each one

e). Collect together an army of marxist political community choir members who will congregate at each flag site and sing Jerusalem at top volume.

The point with e) is that it will likely blow the minds of the 'flag waving/shouting at hotels' crowd as they simply won't be able to work out the meaning of the counter action.

Dear Prof,

So in essence lets just make fun of the flag wavers and hotel shouters, yes/no??

Well my default view that we should simply ignore them isn't making fun of anyone.

And I'm not sure any of the options (with perhaps the exception of d) is making fun. The point about Jerusalem is that it provides a rebuttal to the somewhat disingenuous notion that the plans are merely innocent patriotism rather than having a deeper and darker political meaning. So the repost to 'well why can't we just put up our country's flags to show our patriotism' would be singing a piece often sung jingoistically at Last Night of the Proms, but which has multiple meanings including that building 'Jerusalem on England's green and pleasant land' actually means creating a country fit for all that live here.

So actually the message is one of subtle subversion rather that making fun.
