Another good reason never to vote Labour again.

So the new Britcard, a name that inly a tortuous brainstorming session with the aim what would Farage call it could achieve, will stop illegal immigration because it happens because well meaning employers are easily duped by fake passports.

There's an argument for some form of id but that isn't it. The companies that are employing illegal immigrants aren't interested in this, and are not well meaning. They are exploitative.

And, of course, Farage doesn't think it's a great name because he doesn't want it in the first place. Britcard, shit card.

The UK really is quite backward when it comes to this kind of thing.

in which case using crap arguments about them to make yourself look tough in immigration is worse than pointless.

Given that we have moved to a virtual rather than physical ID card, the easy argument would be cost savings in rationalising access to systems. In one sense the NInumber is like this but just very messy, and then we have NHS numbers, and CHI numbers in the NHS. It would in one sense be an easy argument, we're it not for a variety of failed computing projects at huge costs, that would have brought this closer .

Meanwhile, thd Daily Mail has a conniption

Reminds me of a syllogism that, back in the day, was appropriate to a good proportion of NHS managers I encountered.

'We need to do something, here is something, therefore we should do that then' - thereby creating activity, albeit the extent to which said activity was relevant or effective was another manner: but there was observable activity!

Well, I think I might be OK.  I still have my wartime National Identity Card.  8)

Reminds me of an old Spitting Image sketch lampooning David Steel "As leader of the Liberal Party, I really feel I must stand up and say something."

I am really struggling with this. There is a case to be made for a rationalisation of our digital relationship with the govt which could end uo with something that is described as a digital id card. It wouldn't mean giving over lots of info but rather would be ensuring that the connection is consistent, and efficient. The case for that is not about the grey economy which works, and will work to the side of thar no matter the rules. It's not by extension about illegal immigration. No wonder Starmer goes through 'directors of communication' like he is speed dating.

ETA It is so badly done, it will make thos who might favour action on immigration despise him for using what are simply bad arguments to try and look tough, and it will puss off people that might be in favour of a digital id card that the case being made is irrelevant to the benefits and becomes tied up in Starmer's desperate attempts to be the beige Farage.
