Films you don't like
« on: May 26, 2015, 11:53:42 PM »
As an antidote to the "Favourite film" thread, name the film or films you don't like.  They don't have to be bad, just ones you don't like, for whatever reason.

I'll go first:  The Phantom Menace and its sequels.  Why?  Well, Ja Ja Binks, of course, but also because they nearly wrecked the franchise.  For an in depth and educational critique, see here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI

Warning for BA:  there is bad language in it.

I've seen some horrendous tripe in my time (although occasionally even a bad film can have something worthwhile about it, some redeeming feature) but I think easily the worst film I've ever seen, the most utterly pointless waste of time ever in the history of cinema, was Lars von Trier's Antichrist.

With a couple of notable exceptions I absolutely cannot bear musicals either.

Agree. I try to pretend they don't exist.

Mamma Mia - my grand-daughter watches this more often than is good for her, so I can't avoid it: it is excruciating (as are ABBA).

I have a soft spot for Abba. Mamma Mia is excruciating though.

Titanic. That was a load of old pony.

It sinks at the end, you know.

Apologies to anyone who hasn't seen it.

When I saw it, I really was hoping they'd miss the iceberg.

I was disappointed with the minimal amount of gash that they'd shown.

No, not Kate Winslet's, the one on the side of the ship.

What?  It gets worse - "minimal amount of gash that they'd shown."

Don't worry Bashers: apparently they're doing a sequel.

I genuinely didn't see Titanic on the basis that I knew the ending.

The first half you can do without. I admit that the second half - the actual sinking - is tremendously well done.

I did see it in the end on the tellybox.

I prefer the French and Saunders version.

Oh right, so you won't be wanting me to mention that the astronauts in Apollo 13 all survived then.

Oh I knew that.  I saw Tom Hanks on telly only a few weeks ago.

You see now you've mentioned him - Tom Hanks. It's not films I don't like. It's films with Tom Hanks in that I don't like.

Ruins every one. Doesn't ever convince me or get me to suspend disbelief.

Life is like a box of chocolates - unless its a Tom Hanks film and then you know exactly what you are going to get.

I didn't think he ruined Toy Story.
