Fire Maidens from Outer Space!
« on: February 24, 2016, 03:38:40 PM »
I'm a lifelong fan of science fiction, definitely not science fantasy, I've read most of the various Si Fi giant's books Asimov Clark etc, but I have to confess a secret of mine I have this deep love of really bad Si Fi films.

I was up late last night and zapped the T V and found this gem of a film on that new TV channel 81, it puts out a load of old films of all sorts and guess what "Fire Maidens", it was so appalling I think it has to be there up with possibly the very worst of them all, a potential winner, it was worse than "The Blob" with Steve Mcqueen.

Keep an eye open they do repeat their films from time to time try to not miss it, it's in the so bad it's funny area of bad Si Fi films.

Even the title's fun, Harry fowler and Sydny Tafler to their shame were in this little gem.

I absolutely loved this film, even the detail was appalling, worse than the thirties "Flash Gordon".

Give it a go if you can regards to all,

"...really bad Sci Fi films."  I get it, like the an atheist that would only believe that God exists if He stops in for dinner, but has faith in aliens that have never stopped in.

To whom does this apply? Nobody that I'm aware of, so who did you have in mind*?

* Using the word loosely, of course.

Funnily enough some of the very best Si Fi stories come out of the US but they still can't make a sensible Si Fi film, they even cocked up Azimov's "AI", "K-Pax" was the last US Si Fi film worthy of the name I've seen for some time.

What's god got to do with anything other than it's something that's in your imagination and nowhere else Woody.

The film's hilarious Woody fill your boots and enjoy.

Ippy,

Posting back and forth with you is like being alone. Oh I do think there are beings out there, I don't need evidence. Can you prove God is not real then? Too funny you.

It is - I got dragged to see it by my grandson, and much to my surprise I really enjoyed it.

He also dragged me to see the latest Star Wars, which was shite (like all the previous ones)!

Can you prove that there isn't a tea pot orbiting the sun? I somehow doubt you can.

The tea pot is just as likely to be there as there is any truth that the figure of your primitive superstitious belief is likely to really be there.

Come to that, now, pink unicorns?

If you liked Martian you'll love "K-Pax", a true Si Fi story, without everything blowing up with orange flame and oodles of black smoke, the usual Hollywood piss poor stuff they call Si Fi.

I recently bought a DVD copy of K-Pax for a friend from Amazon for about a tenner, including P & P

I'll have to watch out for that one.

How does it measure up to "Plan 9 From Outer Space" or "A Nymphoid Barbarian In Dinosaur Hell"?

Or indeed "The Erotic Adventures Of Zorro" - a fine film I once saw.

I suppose it depends on the individual's sense of humour, I haven't seen the films you mention but I can see how profound they must be, so being as deeply intelliectuial as wot I im, I will be looking out for them.

Have you ever noticed the aliens in Flash Gordon are all wearing the cast off's from whatever epic they are filming in the studio next door, Ancient Roman army uniforms sprayed with silver paint are a favourite and the last one I saw was when they were all in Robin Hood green tights and feathered hats, no silver paint that time.

They remind me of the Airplaine series where you spot something you missed the last perhaps the fifteenth time you've seen it, have you noticed the jet planes flying with the sound track that has the noise of piston engines yet?

interesting... could you explain the distinction. I think I have a notion but it would be good to hear yours

I'm a sucker for 70s and 80s sci-fi films - rollerball, planet of the apes, silent running, alien, Logan's Run. Dark Star is one of my favourite films ever. I like other stuff too though. I think the 1967 Hammer version of Quatermass and the Pit is a gem, really tense and creepy. K-Pax is a good film too and the human characters back story of personal tragedy is harrowing.

Staing up alte and stumbling across a weird film is so enjoyable. About a year ago I accidentally watched a sci-fi (fantasy) horror called The Keep. It was odd, brilliant included Nazis getting murdered and the soundtrack was by Tangerine Dream... what's not to like?

Gordon... Star Wars is shite?... you are dead to me

A lot of people don't believe that the loch ness monster exists. Now, I don't know anything about zooology, biology, geology, herpetology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, marine biology, cryptozoology, palaeontology or archaeology... but I think... what if a dinosaur got into the lake?

The Keep was directed by Michael Mann who also directed Manhunter and I think you can see that.

Your notion may be the same as mine - perhaps he meant hard as opposed to soft science fiction. If so, on the whole I tend to agree with him.

Given the junk up there, and the prospect of space tourists, a teapot orbiting the sun will probably be the least peculiar thing orbiting the sun.

Just give it time.

I disagree with your assessment, but it's not science fiction, it's fantasy.
