Dear Rhiannon,

Yes! what a twat, I watched the game and Iceland played some wonderful football, not only was there great football skills but highly intelligent play, so far it has been a great start to the football, I only hope England are not going to home again with a report card saying, could do better, and those Germans, are they telepathic, they seem to know where everyone is on the pitch.

Gonnagle.
I will now read posts very carefully and then using the two God given brains cells that I have reply as if I am talking to a two year old, yes that should suffice as a gentle reminder✝️✝️✝️❤️

Owl, that's being rather rude to arrogant arses, isn't it?   ;)

Thanks to a much mis-spent youth I am able, with varying degrees of fluency, to swear in about eleven different languages - I toned this down from what I originally wrote as I wish to be allowed to choose the date upon which I leave this forum rather than have it imposed upon me by the Moderators who, even at their most lenient, would have imploded at what I first typed!

Good game from Cristiano - realisd that the penalty shouldn't have been given, so carefully steered it onto the post in order not take advantage of an appalling refereeing decision.

That ref. oughtn't to be allowed to officiate at any more matches - he made an amazing amount of wrong decisions.

No one else seems to think it was an intentional miss. Or is that you being ironic?

The Iceland captain tried to swop shirts with Ronaldo after the match - his responce?

"Who are you?"

Like I said - arrogant shit!

It was a clear penalty. The decision was correct.
If I remember correctly, both the commentators - having watched the replay - questioned whether it was a penalty.  In fact, if you watch that replay, it starts with Ronaldo grabbing at the Iceland defender's shirt and trying to stop him from getting into a position to challenge for the ball.  If anything, Ronaldo falls to the ground because he gets pulled along by the defender who he is trying to obstruct.

I have seen the replay.

It was a clear penalty. The defender was using a rugby tackle to stop him.

This happens a lot and should result in more penalties.

The decision was correct.

The commentary over the BBC replay says something about a rugby tackle...

and if you watch the longer replay from behind the goal (which isn't on the BBC website, but was played during the match), Ronaldo is using his hands and arms to obstruct the defender long before either player begins to fall.  If anything, the defender was in front of Ronaldo rather than in a position to rugby tackle him at the relevant time.  He was goalside of Ronaldo when the latter began to fall, and I  would suggest that he was actually dragged down by Ronaldo rather than the other way round.  All in all, I think the right outcome occurred.

On a different topic, and not simply Ronaldo-related, there seem to have been a lot of trips and tackles that the 'injured' team have claimed as fouls, but nothing has been given.  Surely, if the referee deems that there hasn't been a foul, the offending player should be being booked for simulation?

So you agree it was a penalty.

It was a penalty and the decision was correct.

I agree that this grappling happens a lot, but if the refs were consistent in awarding spot kicks then they would stop.
You see now defenders with the hands behind their back because they fear hand ball

So you agree it was a penalty.
Since the defender was pulled down by Ronaldo, rather than the other way round, no, I don't.

I watched the match with half a dozen folk in my lounge and not one agreed that it was a penalty.

Not sure that the penalty in this case will help to stop attackers grappling the defenders; if anything, it'll encourage them.

With the number of ball on hand incidents that have been deemed hand ball, I don't blame them.

Then the half dozen people are equally as wrong as you.

Everyone I know said it was a clear penalty, which it was.
