number of Olympians - including the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, Michael Phelps - have been photographed with large red circles on their skin.
What are they, and why is everyone suddenly going dotty over them?

What do you mean 'leeches next'.  They are still used in some parts of the medical profession.

Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) says cupping is not painful, and the red marks left on the skin are caused by blood being drawn to the surface and small capillaries rupturing.

That doesn't sound healthy to me.

Honestly, it sounds like alt-med bollocks.

Flagellation?

I find sauna, cold shower and rolling certain parts ( not those!) with a rolling pin when needed, works pretty well.
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

They are indeed, but not at all for the purposes they were used in olden times.
