Brilliant.

And well deserved IMO.

Excellent news.  It brings the Nobel down to the street, and ordinary people.

Never been a fan personally, but he has produced a significant body of culturally important work - so it is well deserved.

This award is a first for songwriters and prompts me to ponder who else might be a candidate in future years, here is a short list of some whose work has similar cultural significance to Dylan's;

Tom Waits
Peter Hammill
Van Morrison
Joni Mitchell
Michelle Shocked

Any other suggestions?

I'd agree with Joni, not convinced that the others are up there, though I could be persuaded about Tom Waits. I think a case could be made for Springsteen but I fear that a combined literature/peace prize could go to Bono

Neil Young.

On the subject of Dylan - I think fully deserved for his writing, less so for his singing!

Perhaps it will be the UK's best selling singles artist of the 80s

Whilst I'd agree with the first sentence, I'm less sure about the second half of the second.  Bob Dylan is no 'ordinary' person.  He lost a claim to that label decades ago.

wigginhall's post does not claim that Dylan is an ordinary person

It's remarkable, after all these years, there's finally a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature that I can sing better than.

Great stuff! It brings a tear to a folk geek's eye.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Really? No previous winner has been noted for their singing ability.

I wonder what it says about me that the first three people I thought of are all already dead (David Bowie, Lou Reed and John Lennon).

Well done jeremy, an underrated performer!  I don't know about winning the Novel Literature prize but would love to see him compete on Strictly.  This one too:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHK3acm_3n8&list=RDoHK3acm_3n8#t=199

Did folk hear that the BBC used a clip of a Dylan impersonator to illustrate this story when it was first announced?  Think it was covered as the final item on this http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qjrk2 (this week's Newswatch)

Yes he has Hope but he actually acknowledged the prize a few days ago so he was merely quiet about it for a few days until then.  I feel rotten about thinking he was ungracious  :-[ (doubt it bothered him).

I thought I'd already said what I am going to say but can't see it so, at the risk of repeating:
Leonard Cohen, when asked about Dylan's award, said "..it was like pinning a medal on Mount Everest for being the highest mountain.”.  I thought that was marvellous.
