Not sure whether there's a youtube clip of this, but PR also sang for (and with?) Welsh miners.
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Lists of what is needed and a search engine to find your nearest collector (scroll to bottom for latter) are here:  http://www.twam.uk/donate-tools

Robeson was well respected by miners. When he sang at rallies or benefit concerts, he refused any fees or expenses. Sometimes he would stay, not in a local hotel, but with the shop steward of the local miners union. There are pics (though sadly not audio) of him at a miners rally in Cumnock, Ayrshire - and the crowds were immense. I have a pic of my uncle Sam (one of the rescue party at the hellish Knockshinnoch disaster, as a young man, with Paul at the venefit rally.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

There is an issue with posting YouTube links from Android devices for other devices. If you want to access anything that has m.YouTube rather than www.youtube in the link, you can by copying link and pasting in a new window. The link for this thread has been edited to allow direct access and we will retrospectively edit these over time.

Just to note that the links on the Music was my first love thread are pretty much fixed now, due to the extreme diligence of Gordon. Have been reading back through what is by far my favourite thread and there is some great stuff on it. It underlines though that we have some great lost posters, Scaramunga - Where are you? And I that the thread is haunted by the lost posts of Prof Wollofski, much missed.

That is lovely, NS, thank you.

Some years ago I watched the old film, "Proud Valley", mentioned in the clip, about miners in Wales in which Paul Robeson appeared.

I quite clearly remember him, with chorus of miners, singing "They (or You) can't stop us singing", which was marvellous.
