'Strictly': should it continue?
« on: December 18, 2016, 05:13:10 PM »
I have heard a number of folk suggest that, with Len Goodman retiring, now would be a good time for the BBC to retire 'Strictly Come Dancing' - on the grounds that retiring whilst at the top is very good idea.

If that was to happen - and I have no opinion either way - what would you like to see them to replace it with (and should it become another way of fundraising for BBC Children in Need, as it was between Series 2 and 5?)
Are your, or your friends'/relatives', garages, lofts or sheds full of unused DIY gear, sewing/knitting machines or fabric and haberdashery stuff?

Strictly must continue!
I am already bereft at the series ending - wonderfully! - last night.

Len is a legend and will be a tough act to follow - but no-one is indispensible.

What could replace strictly?

Formation paint drying.

Competitive smarminess.

How quickly can you make viewers fall asleep/ or turn off.

Strictly come cake making. (with Len Goodman as judge)

My idea would be a baking competition.

That would work. Every time a contestant falls over and lands on their arse, the judges could say "soggy bottom". It would be hilarious.

More likely, , "Cock-6!", very loudly as they brandish their paddles!

Nah, Strictly is irreplaceable.

Personally I really can't stand it. It's a banal amateur talent contest of the worst kind except for The Voice and X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent (no it hasn't). The one redeeming quality of all of these is that I don't have to watch them and if they were canceled something else equally bad would replace them.

I love every second of every minute of it (X-factor cannot compare!), rarely do I feel that way about an entertainment series so it must be good for me!   Nothing worries me when I watch 'Strictly', I am totally absorbed and delighted.

It's all in the best possible taste.

Dear Mods,

Hope started a thread about Strictly >:( I think a days suspension is in order, so he can reflect on the error of his ways ::)

I will now read posts very carefully and then using the two God given brains cells that I have reply as if I am talking to a two year old, yes that should suffice as a gentle reminder✝️✝️✝️❤️

We enjoyed it, especially as the standard was so high for the top celebrities this year, despite the over the top glamour and glitz. I don't think it will be replaced anytime soon as it achieved such high viewing figures. Actually the highlight for me was the ballroom waltz done by the professionals for Len. and the low points were many of the celebrity guest singers who didn't impress me at all.

However, each to their own. :)

Strictly is awful it has got worse and worse over the years. A programme where you just watch paint drying would be better! ;D

Is Gonners sore because no Scot has ever won it?

My favourite programme.  There's no way they could take it off.   A triumph.

In the dark end of the 2016, Ed Balls gangnam style shines out

Absolutely!

I've also been to see the Strictly Tour at the O2 (the audience all had paddle-scoring-thingies and called out, "Seven!").

Ed Balls was great, so was Rinder.   They were all good this year but I was quite overcome with emotion when Ore won (could almost outdo him with eye leakage).

It's such a wholesome programme, something for all ages.

When the first series started I had no idea I would love it, I don't generally go for Saturday night family entertainment stuff, much prefer intense drama and eating a nice Saturday night dinner.   What a revelation!   I said it was good for me, a tonic.  I now look forward to it every year.

Like enki, I loved the goodbye waltz for Len and, Wigginhall, it is also my favourite programme.

No Scot has won so far (next year maybe), but Judy Murray was great fun when she competed, Pamela Stephenson-Connolly came second and she's married to the Big Yin and anyway, Andy is Sports Personality of the Year so what more d'you want?

PS:  I was just going through a pile of DVDs and found one of a Strictly tour which I had forgotten about.  It was one where Letitia Dean was competing and Kate Thornton hosting.

I also have a Strictly album, bought for me one Christmas, featuring the lovely Alesha Dixon who won that year.

Can't wait to get the DVD of the new tour, with Ed Balls & Daisy Lowe competing, and Naga hosting.

Am I fan or what?

Oh and in November 2015 Laura Main (from Aberdeen) won the Children in Need Strictly Come Dancing special with dancer Brendan Cole, so the Scots do have a champion.

I like Strictly. IT is like a pair of warm, comfortable slippers turning up every Autumn. I would miss it if it was not on.

As to one posters suggestion about watching paint dry, all I can say is Bah Humbug!

If you don't enjoy it fine, you can always turn over and watch the zenith of entertainment as embodied in the X factor. :P

If there are no Olympics to turn on the TV for, then Strictly is about the only time I turn it on during the year!
