But one too many

That's ridiculous!
Just over eating a pie or not.
I can see how someone could abuse it by informing friends of their choices before hand but........
It is his business and choice if he eats a pie or not, I'm not happy with the idea the bookies can manipulate private individuals by making up bets on personal things.
No matter what personal thing the bookies chose, or what choice ( to eat or not to eat) you made, you would have the same situation. Nowadays with new laws on "bribery and corruption" we are all vulnerable to our actions being misread, and being accused of being in a dodgy situation.
After all, he could have chosen under the circumstances, not to eat a pie. But the problem is the same because he could still have told his " mates" his intention before hand.
Bets usually go both ways, so whatever he did, he's still implicated.
I think what we need is some sort of control to stop bookies from creating bets on private individuals and their choices in the first place.
In my work place, we can't even accept a bottle of wine or a pen now in case it comes under " bribery and corruption" not because it's the law but the company I work for is OTT in its adherence, due to what can happen if someone makes an accusation.
Private individuals, in the public eye need to have private choices protected.
No bookie should be able to create bets on "private choices" of individuals.
I'd say it goes against his privacy in private matters and puts him in a difficult position, either way.
Short of eating his pie in a private place like the loo, what was he supposed to do?
I think we need something to protect individuals and their choices, from bookies.
I think it's the bookies that are at fault here, creating bets like that.
IMO they shouldn't be allowed to do that, they have lost this man his job, and raised all sorts of questions that should never have arisen on his private choice of eating a pie.
If it was me, I'd be suing them for the loss of me job and invasion of my privacy.
I'd say it's unethical for betting companies to put bets on private individuals " choices" no matter what they do, it places them in a vulnerable position.
I don't think it was a responsible thing for the betting company to do, to someone.
The temptation to see a few mates ok is too great.
We need something to prevent this sort of unethical betting when it has such a potential to raise questions on a private individuals integrity.
No matter how he reacted it could have raised criticism, imo the blame lies solely with the betting company for creating the situation.
It's them that need controlling, not your "pie eating footballer."
We need to deal with the problem at source by stopping betting companies from creating bets that put individuals in compromising positions.
