New BBC Channel for Scotland
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:11:33 AM »
Thought this might be of interest to posters North of the border:

Of course, it might be of interest to posters South of the border also ;)

It is a bit of a fudge: what was wanted was to opt out of the current 6pm national news in that very often some of the lead stories are of limited interest here: for example stuff to do with education or the NHS since these are fully devolved, so that what the 'Education Secretary' is up to doesn't apply here.

How a new channel would fare here depends I suppose on the content and if that gets some viewer loyalty as it develops over the initial year or so - but I fear, as I said, it will be seen as a fudge.

I note on FB that some seem to think this is a sop to the Scottish Government. However given that a growing number of Scots mistrust the MSM in general, and the BBC in particular, I don't see this new channel being any help in removing that mistrust.

I'm probably being thick here but what does the acronym MSM stand for?

* I've goggled it.

The Beeb had a programme here called "Scotland 2014" - following (or sometimes preceding) Newsnight. It was supposed to be a cutting edge day by day account of events in that year (and, as Scotland 2015 and following). It petered out, being at best a damp squib, villified by all sides for the anadyne pap it generated in a vain attempt to look unbaised. That only exacerbated the feeling of mistrust in what is perceived as a 'british' company projecting 'british' values to Scotland. Many now refuse to pay the licence here - I'm not one of them, because I value many BBC programmes both on Radio and TV; however I understand their anger.
