I don't think that you can beat Willoughby Goddard as Gessler. As a kid I did not believe that anybody could be this corpulent, and repulsive.

I am currently rather enjoying an Australian programme called 'A Place to Call Home' which has a villain(ness) called Regina. Clearly modeled on Alexis from Dynasty, the actress relishes every moment on screen. Wonderfully OTT.

However I accept that this is almost a caricature of a villain.

I did find James Norton as Tommy in 'Happy Valley' very convincing and therefore frightening.

I remember that story too. Even today the memory of the dying big fish makes my eyes fill up. And YES I cheered when the dwarf got his just deserts.

Jamie Dornan in The Fall was an excellent villain.
There is currently a trend to have dishy villains.
