I regard myself as reasonably well informed, but I fear that knowing what is going on in Syria is virtually impossible

All I know is that we should keep well out of this mess. Iraq, Afghanistan and Lybia should have taught us that by now.

As I watch the news on Syria, I think we have moved beyond the enemy of my enemy is my friend to 'The enemy of my friend's enemy's enemy's enemy's friend's enemy is the friend of my enemy's friend's friend's friend's enemy'

At the moment I do not worry about escalation. It was a token smack and the  Russians and Chinese were informed.

Just a show to make it look like punishment.
I see gullible people, everywhere!

I didn't think there is too much doubt the Assad regime was behind that ghastly chemical attack.

I've looked and looked at what is being said and it was a chemical attack and not the 'accident' as claimed by Russia. There's also a time discrepancy in Russia's claims for some reason. I guess it is most likely Assad behind it but we can't know for sure. However I am concerned that we will end up slipping into tin hat territory - there are a lot of people claiming that the photo of the dead twins was faked. And the alt right are apparently several pissed off with Trump this morning.

Was anyone else as sickened as I was by Trump's repeated reference to God in his tv appearance this morning?

Me too. Don't understand how people think he is a man of God any more than someone else.
He appeals to some sections of society, saw something recently where he was at a big wrestling match, got into the ring with his microphone and spouted.

I didn't think there is too much doubt the Assad regime was behind that ghastly chemical attack.
Not sure about that; its all too easy to blame it on Assad tho' likely of course.

I can't see the terrorists having the wherewithal like planes to drop the chemicals as apparently happened in this case.

Oh, there is plenty of doubt...
Quote
According to former Congressman Ron Paul, the chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhoun that killed 30 children and has led to calls for the Trump administration to intervene in Syria could have been a false flag attack.

Pointing out that the prospect of peace in Syria was moving closer before the attack, with ISIS and Al-Qaeda on the run, Paul said the attack made no sense.

“It looks like maybe somebody didn’t like that so there had to be an episode,” said Paul, asking, “who benefits?”

“It doesn’t make any sense for Assad under these conditions to all of a sudden use poison gases – I think there’s zero chance he would have done this deliberately,” said Paul.

The former Congressman went on to explain how the incident was clearly being exploited by neo-cons and the deep state to enlist support for war. “It’s the neo-conservatives who are benefiting tremendously from this because it’s derailed the progress that has already been made moving toward a more peaceful settlement in Syria,” said Paul.

After the Wotsit Faced, Constipated Orangutang came into office he declared a wish to work with Russia and maybe even President Assad in the battle against the Islamic State, there was even some hope that the international community would accept the legitimacy of Assad once again.

Only last week came the statements from Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson and the ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki R. Haley, indicating effectively that Washington could accept President Assad remaining in power and that the only priority in the Middle East was the defeat of the Islamic State terrorist organization, which is concentrated in Syria and Iraq.

On Monday, Western officials were gathering in Brussels to weigh billions of dollars in reconstruction aid to the Assad government.

And then there was Tuesday....

As the Ex-Congressman points out:“It doesn’t make any sense for Assad under these conditions to all of a sudden use poison gases – I think there’s zero chance he would have done this deliberately.”

Just to add; This guy reflects my opinion of the so-called attack in Syria.

Peter Fordham a previous ambassador to Syria had this to say on the BBC the other day:

No doubt there are any number of possibilities and even more possible conspiracy theories, however sometimes action needs to be taken based on the information available and in a timely manner. Hopefully more evidence and facts will emerge to confirm responsibility for the sarin attack. In the meantime, the US response is a fait accompli with positive outcomes possible.

I seem to remember a certain poster from Finland being critical of Hillary Clinton because she was in favour of air strikes in Syria and thus an alleged warmonger.

And now her opponent is trying to start World War III.

But Ricky was saying, or words to this effect, that the whole thing could have been staged by the anti-Assad lot and now that buffoon has gone in and taken the bait.
