Queers
« on: August 01, 2017, 02:56:40 PM »
As part of the Gay Britannia season there are a series of short monologues playing at 10 each evening on BBC4.

The first two last night were very good imo.

The first one in particular about a soldier in the First World War played by Ben Whishaw was excellent - and a finer bit of acting I've not seen in a long time.

The second one had a particular appeal to me as the character was from Nottingham and they got the accent and references pretty spot on.

Worth watching.

Recording them all for a binge - Ben Whishaw, always a splendid actor (never better IMHO as Keats in Bright Star was on lovely form in Lilting last night too).

Intrigued about the accuracy of the Nottingham accent - not easy to do and incredibly rarely done (why does 'Midlands' for telly people so often mean 'West Midlands'? Totally different area, totally different dialect), so I'll be critical.

Well I don't have a terribly good ear for that sort of thing - but the first thing partner said was: "That's a Nottingham accent" although the actor is from London. FFion Whitehead I believe.

There's a black actor from Nottingham who does a sterling job of keeping the E. Mids. end up - his name will come to me eventually.

I hope this works:

It is nearly 40 years now since I lived in my native region (born in Nottingham lived in Grantham from 5 to 23, and then spent four years in mid-30s in Nottingham) and I CANNOT do the Nottingham accent.

I managed 13/16 in the test.

16/16.

But then I'm only just down the road, and there's not much in the way of difference.

The black actor from Nottingham I was thinking of is called Johann Myers, by the way. Unfortunately not much of him online, but he's the big nasty bastard in this clip from 2:10 on:

14/16, but not surprising because I mix with quite a few birders from South Yorkshire/ Nottinghamshire

13, not knowingly been to Nottingham but some of the usage is similar to other places.
