Sad, but given his dementia of recent years, also for the best.  Campbell singing Jimmy Webb was one of the great combinations.

I agree. Even so that in itself is sad. And Wichita Lineman is one of the sounds of my childhood.

Sad to hear, but not unexpected.

I'm not a fan of 'country music' myself but his Wichita Lineman is a great recording: so much so that I can't imagine anyone else doing it justice.

Fans of the song will enjoy this podcast on it (from Radio 4).

I like some country - mainly the folk stuff, but Glen Campbell's voice and guitar was a superb combination, and I loved it then and still do. I met him once - not at a concert or anything - but at the Keswick convention in around 1986 - he wasn't a 'guest' - just one of those attending a seminar - I think John Stott was the speaker.

A singer of some fantastic and memorable songs the subtle anti war song Galveston being my favourite.

I saw a short clip about him on the news this morning and did not previously know that before becoming a singer he was a very highly regarded guitarist, a much sought after session musician used by many of the greats like Sinatra. One of his party pieces apparently was to play his guitar whilst holding it behind his head...that will never catch on!

My dad loves Glen Campbell but my mum wouldn't let him play him often. Even so he is one of those singers who takes me back to the safety of childhood. I didn't appreciate how fine a singer he was then of course. I love Galveston.

Interesting to read his Wikipedia page. He was the seventh of twelve children and had seven of his own with four marriages. This is irrelevant as far as his singing and musical skills are concerned, but interesting nevertheless. I wonder what happened to all his siblings?

Possibly one of the less well known tracks he was involved with. He was playing the guitar as a session musician when the lead singer of the band decided he didn't have the vocal ability to sing this so Campbell stepped up leading to this - My World Fell Down by Sagittarius
