Aw bless. He had a good innings and he'll be missed. A legend indeed!

My favourite memory of him was when after a long period out of 'fashion' he got to be guest host on HIGNFY. It is still one of the funniest episodes of the show and he worked the audience brilliantly. Later he was to credit that opportunity as the reason his career kicked off again.

... as with Bob Monkhouse.

Dunno about "poor old" - he made it to 89, and was in excellent health for most of that time.

- Yep. Wasn't that an emergency host - after Dayton was 'exposed'?
Talk about serendipity.

It was certainly in the early days of the guest hosts. Watching Ian Hislop's bafflement at the Play Your Cards Right references was so funny.

I remember that very well too! I have recollection of other panellists being a bit 'snobby' about him too but didn't matter because he was brilliant.

Can't say I was a huge fan overall, but 'Generation Game' under his stewardship was brilliant, and I loved his Hignfy appearance.
