I am going to be something of the pooper of the party here.

Untold story? My hairy arse. That's some Hollywood publicist's wank sock.

I will say however on the strength of that trailer alone - alone, mind you - that John C. Reilly will do and in the tiny snippet I heard, Steve Coogan has got Stan's voice creepily correct in a way I never thought I would hear.

I grew up on the real two and I am not doing cartwheels about them having the studio treatment.

That said; yeah, I'll see it. I have sandwiches, crisps and a flask prepared to be critical 😐

Part of the thing I like is the BBC involvement given that various recreations such as the Morecambe and Wise one. To have any treatment now seems good, and yes the story isn't untold but it isn't well known.

Maybe we should have a forum outing?

Me three! I haven't been to the cinema for over a decade, but I'll go for that. Laura Lanhardy, one of the two greatest female comedians, the other being Erica Nernie.

The picture of Stan siphoning out his latest batch of home made beer into bottles via a rubber tube, it makes me laugh inside, outside and takes me a time to settle down after even just thinking about the pair of them, opening the bonnet of their car and turning the record over to the other side, they all joined the foreign legion because of the same woman even a photo of that same woman over the fireplace in the CO's office.

I'm laughing now thinking of them now, their car cut in half when going through a band saw.

It's not called the Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy fan club, It's 'The Sons of the Desert' fan club I think it's based in South End Essex, don't forget it's Essex so it'll be Souf End.

Regards to all ippy.

I'm not a fan of any of these old comedians. I just don't find anything they do funny. I think it's probably a cultural thing.

However, the film looks awesome if the trailer is anything to go by.

The appeal of Charlie Chaplin as a comedian passes me by but pathos is another thing altogether - the end of City Lights always has me bawling.

Buster Keaton was another genius.

I have happy memories of when L & H used to be a regular fixture in the Beeb's scheduling. I haven't seen one of their films for years, maybe even a couple of decades. They always made me laugh, and like the honourable member for Shakertown I also am left untouched by Chaplin. Although he could turn his hand to writing a good tune.

I can see your point of view on humour some things just don't make us laugh no matter how funny someone else finds a particular humour, Tony Hancock leaves me cold Charlie Chaplin and Victoria Wood too, I suppose it's a bit like our choice of colours I can't stand anything turquoise and can't give any rational reason why I don't like it, ditto comedians.

I suspect that Charlie Chaplin was more concerned with making films which were social and cultural commentaries rather than just being a comedian - comedy was the medium he used to contain his message. Stan and Ollie were comedians.

One of my childhood memories is of Stan and Ollie opening some kind of exhibition or trade fair in Grantham, perhaps in the early 1950s. Stan had a relative (?sister) who lived in or near the town and would visit her when in England.

Useful pub quiz question:

Q     What single attribute did Charlie Chaplin and Eva Peron have in common?

A     Their bodies were stolen after their deaths.
