Pipe smokers live longer than non-smokers!

I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

Stick this in your pipe and smoke it, health nazis!

Forget the health aspects of smoking I very much doubt if any one would want to smell as though they had rolled around in the contents of a dust cart, smokers don't exactly smell of roses.

Most people like the smell of pipes.

Pipe tobaco does smell nice. I bought a pipe once but lost patience with it. Could never get the tobaco to burn evenly and at the right temperature.

I do have the odd cigarette usually when down the pub or if I'm stressed out at work. Snus is popular here, which is pretty good. A good nicotine hit.

A good tobacco both smells and tastes nice. I say that as a non smoker.

I don't smoke: have never smoked, but I recall as a child the pleasantly sweetish smell of pipe-smoke emanating from a now long-gone uncle, who smoked a tobacco called 'Holland House' - I've no idea why that sticks in the memory.

Of course it isn't all good news, Steve - pipe smokers have an increased risk of oral cancers (which caused the demise of the aforementioned uncle).

One of my father's younger brothers and my maternal grandfather were pipe smokers, they both died early deaths, attributed to their smoking!

No one is permitted to smoke in our home, I am so glad my husband, children and myself have never smoked.

Astonishing cherry picking of data.

From the link - the first data (which doesn't show a health benefit of pipe smoking) is from 2002 and the link to the supposed data on reduced death rate is from 1964!!! How much research has gone on since then.

Neither sets of data make it clear whether there is adjustment for other factors that impact on health, most notably poverty. I suspect pipe smoking is largely the preserve of the well healed and affluent - a hobby for a certain group of upper middle class men - and of course that group have higher than average life expectancy anyway.

SteveH,

Ah the old correlation equals causation mistake. What other factors that differentially affect life expectancy among pipe smokers were ignored?

Did you know that eating more ice cream causes more burglaries by the way? The proof is undeniable - whenever ice cream sales go up in a given area, so do burglaries. QED

What's that you say: "But ice cream sales go up in the summer, which is when more people leave their windows open at night so burgling is easier to do"?

Erm...is that the time already...?

Like some others, I do quite like the smell of burning pipe tobacco. Actually smoking a pipe I found difficult, there is a knack to it. Also it does stain the teeth.

Just remembered another nice example from (I think) the Netherlands.

Back in the day it was noticed that storks nested on the roofs of houses with new babies more often than on the houses with no babies. Clearly therefore storks had something to do with delivering babies.

Sadly for stork theory though it was also the case that new parents tended to stack their fires with logs more generously when their babies arrived and the leaking heat made their roofs that bit warmer therefore than the others, which is what attracted the storks to build their nests there.

Ah well.

Pipe tobacco does smell pleasant.  Pipe smokers tend to smoke a lot less tobacco, the ritual of filling and lighting is as important as the smoking which is probably why it has less impact on health than other types of smoking, and they don't inhale. Can cause cancer on the lip so I understand, how common that is I don't know but it would be a good idea to not perch the pipe in the same place on the lip all the time.

One good thing about smoking in general, it's virtually the best best demonstration of cognitive dissonance to be found, where the victim, the smoker, gives his or herself more and more convoluted baseless excuses to themselves inside their heads in an effort to justify keeping on with their quite obviously irrational addiction.

All of this against potential death or shortening of their life, oh yes, what was that about pipe smoke smelling pleasant.

Regards ippy.

I very much doubt that. Cigars are for the affluent: pipes were traditionally very popular with the working classes - women as well as men, once. Clay pipes were the worker's pipe of choice until the early 20th Century, and more recently the 'Falcon' metal-stemmed pipe was the working man's pipe.

The fact remains that smoking does much more harm than good and costs the NHS money. It can also cause damage to passive smokers, especially to children, I think it should be illegal to smoke in their presence. My son-in-law's parents used to smoke when he was younger, he had persistent chest infections. The doctor suggested their smoking was the cause. They gave up, and his chest infections were a thing of the past.
