Who would work for Ryanair?

Ryanair sacked six crew members for staging a photo in which they appear to be sleeping on the floor of the airport when stranded in Malaga.

However, the reality is that they spent five hours in the crew room with no food or drink facilities and only barely adequate furniture, so while the photo was faked, it does point to a nasty secret about the way Ryanair treat their staff.

You have to be off your head to work for, or travel with, that junk class airline. We flew with them at the turn of this century and vowed never to do so again. They seem to have gone from bad to much worse since then.

As a regular user of Ryanair, I have to state that it has improved considerably since I first used it.

   ... But then, the last time I used Ryanair, the return fare from East Midlands to Bergerac was less than the cost of parking for a week at East Midlands

Well, it theoretically draws attention to the inhuman conditions Ryanair expects their staff (including pilots) to put up with, but it seems to have backfired.

Yeah, I got what they wanted to say, but it wasn't going to be hard to identify them, and it's no secret that Ryanair treats its staff like shit.

I suppose the only good thing about working for that company is that they are relatively easy to join, and a year with them gives you the necessary skills to find a better job with a better employer.

I've never travelled with Ryanair, not because I've heard awful things (I have now), but because it just hasn't happened. Admit to being fairly ignorant about airlines apart from two old friends and one relative who were cabin crew but not for Ryanair. In days gone by, air stewards/stewardesses needed to be fluent in more than one language which they were.

I investigated a bit online and agree with Humph that Ryanair is easy to join, they don't ask for a lot of education and take people from age 18 (Emirates take from 21). The pay is dreadful! Some airlines give free accommodation, an apartment. I think it would be a good job to gain experience, treat as an apprenticeship, then move on to something better.

Looking at the BBC link, they certainly do seem to be crap employers but no-one is forced to work for them.

My son uses Ryanair frequently for flights between England and Spain, no problems other than the occasional delay, mostly due to factors other than the airline. Flights are cheap, he doesn't care about meals or carry any luggage.

But that doesn't really work... junior employees will learn bad practices and spread them in the industry, bringing standards down further. Operators should only be allowed if they meet basic standards, including those set by appropriate unions.
