Christmas 2018 thread
« on: December 04, 2018, 03:05:08 PM »
We had a rather lovely Christmas thread last year, and breaking with tradition, this one is actually started later in the year than that one. I'm looking forward to some quiet time with my much loved partner, who has been missed this year lots due to travelling. So obviously we will be away for Christmas, avoiding people

Me too, quiet time, avoiding people, no family!  But everybody, enjoy it your own way.

Bah, humbug.
I came to realise that every time we recognise something human in creatures, we are also recognising something creaturely in ourselves. That is central to the rejection of human supremacism as the pernicious doctrine it is.

Read this last night, brought tears to my eyes. You'll have a wonderful time.

Bah, humbug.

I wouldn't go that far but atm feel far too tired and listless forChristmas (been like it for ages, as if I'm not really here), doesn't seem real. I'd like Christmas to be postponed for a while  :D.

My broken arm is a good excuse for me to be spared cooking Christmas Dinner this year, our eldest is doing that task. :)

I think this is the first time for 50 years that I won't be with family for some of the time.  There is a God, who makes your dreams come true!

Was that animated, or at least approved, by Raymond Briggs?

I would have thought they would have been sued for breach of copyright if there wasn't approval. That said, I don't know who owns the copyright.

Son (Salisbury one who visited me in hospital) and daughter-in-law going to Northampton to be with granddaughter and partner, and other granddaughter and partner will go there from Sheffield on 26th. Other son visited today.

I am going to a neighbour's for lunch. I am very comfortable on my own, but she is also going to be on her own this year so, as I know her well,, it will be a pleasant day.

My daughter is here with her boyfriend, we are having a Christmassy sort of dinner a bit later. She'll be staying now until after the festivities but out and about tomorrow with friends, he's going off to his parents tomorrow. My dad and nephew are here too, all talking, chatting and laughing in the next room. My in laws popped in earlier to see their granddaughter and grandson (my nephew), they're going down to my sister-in-law in Sussex this evening, back 27th I think.

I am still tired but feel quite nice, relaxed. Place is a mess but - who cares.
Cheers!

I am in Florence in an apartment near the Ponte Vecchio. Arrived Friday, leaving next Thursday. We were due to have my brother in law and partner with us but they were needing to move and it worked out that that just finished last Monday so they needed to get everything sorted.

Last night was my wife's birthday so we had dinner in what may be our favourite restaurant anywhere, Il Santo Bevitore. Today we went to the excellent Mercato Centrale for supplies, lunch and some Prosecco.

As well as the 22nd being my wife's birthday, it is the anniversary of the murder of a friend of ours. I've posted a couple of times about John in the past. The linking of the 2 occasions is now there forever, and it acts a reminder that Christmas and New Year is not a time of joy for all. Add to that the centenary of the tragic Iolaire that I have posted about makes me very aware that those of us blessed with happiness this season need to use that to think and help others, even if that is just by being there to listen.

I hope you all have a Christmas and New Year that gives you what you need. Take care, be kind, and keep passing the open windows.

Been yoked into the rota for hospital visitibg this Christmas day; two elders inflicting further misery on those already feeling low.... Then, the minister (lucky so-and-so) is on hols after Boxing day, so yours vtruly is taking a couple of services at local retirement homes as well as Sunday worship - two services in our linked churches - on the 30th. The advantage of being blind is that you can't see the congregation falling asleep during the sermon. The disadvantage is that you cannot see the t hrown hymnbooks.....

Anchor your post made me laugh, thanks! You are funny & kind, wish I could invite you round for a wee dram and a bite but Scotland's a long way away.

I'm making a habit of this, up late two night's running. I potter around but place still looks a mess. My daughter, who just got in from going out with her cousin & his boyfriend & hers, says it looks immaculate compared to her place. I can just imagine (she's the messier of my two takes after her mum in that respect). My dad, who went home after watching Watership Down, never notices anything! He could walk in mess, dust himself off and not remember what he walked in. ALways been like that.

Going to bed soon though & really must have good night's sleep Christmas eve.

Hope you all have a great time if I don't see you b4 Christmas (prob'ly will).

NS how divine to be in Florence at this time of year. Very romantic. I understand what you say about memories.... but hope you enjoy yourselves anyway, your friend would want you to.

Lotsa luv to all.

PS: That includes Rhiannon and Shaker if they look in & anyone else who disappeared this year.

Abbreviated Nativity Story
Gabriel gives Mary the result of her pregnancy test, Joseph is leaned on to do the decent thing. Bethlehem’s Travel Lodges are fully booked; a stable, without en suite facilities, is as good as it gets. Baby Jesus can’t wait to say “Hello”. As Mary is unprepared a manger serves as his crib. Shepherds make the usual complimentary baby comments. Three Kings drop by with exotic gifts, but clothes, nappies and baby wipes are top of Mary’s wish list! An angel pops up and tells them to get out of there a.s.a.p. as Herod, threatened by the new baby, was having a ‘hissy fit’. They seek political asylum in Egypt.

A very Happy Christmas to you all. :)

I would just like to wish all posters a wonderful festive season, whatever your particular faith or lack thereof, and hope that 2019 brings us some resolution to the issues that divide us.

As I have remarked before, we share much more in common as people, than those things that we think divide us.
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. - God is Love.

Thanks, Robbie. John would indeed want everyone to be happy, he was a joy. The memory makes the good times sweeter as it means they are cherished more, and it makes it easier to be aware that others may not be in such a good place. I'm lucky to be able to get away and Florence is such a wonderful place. I hope your Christmas is a warm pleasure.
