For those of a nostalgic disposition these Xmas ads from (presumably) the first half of the 20th century may be of interest, where those than aren't patronising or sexist are downright dangerous.

Our Oliphant (aka SteveH) should definitely note the Kaywoodie pipes that promise will 'give him a longer lifetime of smoking he can enjoy without worry' and for those of a scientific disposition there is the 'Atomic Energy Lab' which, as an alternative to musical chairs, families could have fun '"playing hide and seek with the gamma ray source", challenging players to a game using a Geiger counter to locate a radioactive sample hidden in a room'. Those with leftover veg tomorrow would do well the check the last ad in the series: just make a jelly with them (you know it makes sense).

Them were the days- happy Saturnalia!

Laugh? I nearly started.

Yeah....glad it's not just me, thought I was missing something. Maybe more to come.

Can't quite believe it's Christmas eve, doesn't feel like it. Later maybe. Nice to see so many of you here today.

Ippy's grandson's first Christmas! Bless.

No more work till Thursday, and a pig-out (well, duck-out, actually) and booze-out tomorrow, and a bike ride on Boxing day, if the weather's reasonably clement. Hooray! Merry Krimble, all!

Time of nostalgia for me. Remembering the times when the whole family came together at my brother in law's house in Snaith which was opposite the church, and which consisted of two 16th Century houses joined together. There would be 8 of us and 3 dogs. We always loved playing games and whatever it was We had to have a plethora of rules. For hide ans seek, for instance, one person hid, and the others would search in total darkness whilst tied together. One year I created a murder mystery, giving each person a goal, apart from the main part which was to solve who was the murderer. Each person had to dress up so we had a barmaid, a German explorer(complete with hat with mosquito net), a preacher from Dudley, a drunken business man, a prostitute, a kleptomaniac..It lasted all Boxing Day. I even hid a secret document in the Church cemetery as part of the plot. The best part was that I sent a letter to everyone involved weeks before we got together with all the details that each person needed to know. I even sent one to myself so that they wouldn't realise that I was the one who had created it. A friend of mine who travelled to various places as part of his job posted these letters from different towns so that they wouldn't suspect it was me. it worked exceedingly well.

Happy times!

Have a good Christmas, everyone. :)

enki that was so interesting! What lovely memories. I've been to Snaith, years ago, love Yorkshire.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow - well actually later today. Everything's in order.

Hope everyone has a very happy Christmas or Yuletide, whatever you call it.

Love, Robbie x

Merry Krimble, everybody! Too late for this year, but I once invented Krimbo Krumble - mince pie mixture with a crumble topping. It was delish. Maybe I'll make it for New Year's day.

Hee hee, doing secret things and leaving them outside bedrooms. Silly being as me, husband and daughter are all adults. Dad's coming round about 1pm.Going back to bed now and don't intend to get up too early, those days are long over. Couldn't resist looking on R&E.

Hope all you sleeping people have a happy time.

Happy Christmas all. A little quote from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe:

“How do you know?” he asked, “that your sister’s story is not true?”
“Oh, but –” began Susan, and then stopped. . . “But Edmund said they had only been pretending.”
“That is a point,” said the Professor, “which certainly deserves consideration; very careful consideration. For instance–if you will excuse me for asking the question–does your experience lead you to regard your brother or your sister as the more reliable? I mean, which is the more truthful?”
“That is a point,” said the Professor, “which certainly deserves consideration; very careful consideration. For instance–if you will excuse me for asking the question–does your experience lead you to regard your brother or your sister as the more reliable? I mean, which is the more truthful?”
“That’s the funny thing about it, Sir,” said Peter. “Up till now, I’d have said Lucy every time.”
“And what do you think, my dear?” said the Professor, turning to Susan.
“Well,” said Susan, “in general, Id’ say the same as Peter, but this couldn’t be true–all this about the wood and the Faun.”
“That is more than I know,” said the Professor, “and a charge of lying against someone whom you have always found truthful is a very serious thing; a very serious thing indeed.”
“We were afraid it mightn’t even be lying,” said Susan. “We thought there might be something wrong with Lucy.”
“Madness, you mean?” said the Professor quite coolly. “Oh, you can make your minds easy about that. One has only to look at her and talk to her to see that she is not mad.” [The children don’t know what to think at this point!]
“Logic!” said the Professor half to himself. “Why don’t they teach logic at these schools?”

Hope all your turkeys were big ones and your left overs few. No curry and everything else made with turkey left overs.

Hope all had a good Christmas. Been out so much over Christmas last meal yesterday just the 4 of us which was great for a change.

Now to rest and get over the Christmas where being busy was enjoyable but tiring. Hope your stocking filled with what you wanted.
God bless and enjoy the festivities through to the new year. xx

The place to go for German Christmas refuseniks. It appears that you can still smoke in indoor public places in Germany.

I'm sure they have no-smoking bars and restaurants available for those who pretend to hate or be allergic to tobacco-smoke. Did you get the joke in my post?

Bought a bottle of Bowmore andfour bottles of cider for tonight and tomorrow, only to find that No. 2 brat has bought loads of Magners cider, which I've never tried. I mention this in advance, as my excuse for any bizarre posts from me in the next 24 hours.
