Jeremy Hardy dead
« on: February 01, 2019, 10:02:42 AM »

I met him once, incredibly kind. Always saw him and Linda Smith as twinned. Now both gone.

I saw him do a gig at the Glastonwick festival just before Brexit. Apparently, his father had died only a week before that, but you wouldn't have known from his set. He was a real professional (and very funny).

A kind and thoughtful comedian. I liked him a lot.

Why?
I think he was being sarcastic.
Why bother posting to say you've never heard of someone? (I admit I've done it in the past, but it's a bit pointless.)

Why?
As Steve notes, it was sarcasm. You aren't exactly known for your wide knowledge of popular culture. And that's not a bad thing, it's just who you are. Knowing who Jeremy Hardy was doesn't make you a worse or a better person. But it was hardly surprising to me that you didn't.

My husband and I dislike what you describe as 'popular culture'. The only stand up comedian I ever liked was the late Ken Dodd. We watch very little TV these days, most of which is on our TV iplayer. We are interested in the news, documentaries and some dramas.

And given you have posted similarly to that often, then I wasn't going to be surprised that you hadn't heard of Jeremy Hardy. I should note though that he was probably better known for his radio work than TV.

Insightful and thoughtful as a comedian, and a great man to boot. The News Quiz won't be the same.

You dislike popular culture and then cite Ken Dodd as someone you liked. Methinks the lady doth......

I have never heard of him.

If you have ever seen Blackadder Goes Forth - Corporal Punishment, he is Blackadder's jailer.

Was very sad to see this as didn't know he was ill and thought he was a nice and funny guy. A real 'Oh no' moment.

"My husband and I", eh? Then "We". Do you never enjoy things independently of eachother?

Jeremy Hardy was very funny and quite a modest character.

Sad news.

STOP MAKING ASSUMPTIONS! For your information, my husband and I have very little in common, apart from our children and similar tastes in some TV programmes. We aren't lovey, dovey. He likes music, I don't, he likes the theatre, I don't, he likes holidays, I don't, he likes eating out, I don't. Until he was sadly struck down with a brain haemorrhage in 2006 we did our own thing entirely. Nowadays because he is not able drive anymore he is reliant on me to take him places, which I must admit can be a bit of a pain if it is somewhere I have no wish to go. However, we will have stuck it out for 50 years on August 14th, so it has worked well for us.

To return to the topic of Jeremy Hardy, I am wondering if Radio 4 is going to dos any kind of tribute programme. I'd love to hear some of his best bits from ISIHAC again.

I loved his wry, insightful sense of humour. I also loved his attempts to sing and his being completely unabashed when the rest of the ISIHAC team made it clear how truly awful his 'singing' was. And indeed it was just about as bad as it gets. But hey! - Kanye West has made millions out of being even worse, and he certainly doesn't realise he's total crap.

May be it is just me, but I find with the New Year there are many deaths of stars and famous people.  I was just reminded of something I heard years ago.

What is the difference between Beethoven when he was alive and after he died?

In life he composed... in death he decomposed....
