Sad, but not entirely a surprise at the age of 97.

Her voice was remarkable. I liked her screen persona. In later life she dedicated herself to animal welfare. She sounded ok to me.

 Once I had a secret love
 That lived within the heart of me
 All too soon my secret love
 Became impatient to be free

So I told a friendly star
 The way that dreamers often do
 Just how wonderful you are
 And why I'm so in love with you

Now I shout it from the highest hills
 Even told the golden daffodils

I think I was in love with her when I was about 14, or at least her screen persona.   She radiated cheerfulness, and she felt safe, not too sexy.   There has been some interesting feminist stuff on her toughness with men, on screen again.   Off-screen, a bit of a disaster, I think she lost all her money.  And that voice, like cream and honey.  I remember my mum singing her songs.

I went to a singalong Calamity Jane in the Glasgow Film Theatre a couple of years ago, was just joyful.

I shall be playing that at the dance my wife and I run on Sunday, which will hopefully evoke nostalgic and happy memories in the minds of the dancers. :)
