Cycling in the 1950s

A cycle day-ride in 1955, via a British Railways 'Cyclists' Special'. Not a helmet, Wetherspoons, or mobile phone to be seen - them were t'days!

I have said many times that I think high viz jackets and helmets should be compulsory for all cyclists.

There is no evidence that helmets make a significant difference, and anyway, ordinary cycling (not serious, off-road mountain-biking) is not dangerous. I've been cycling for 60-odd years, and put in a high annual mileage, and I have never suffered even a minor head injury - not even in my one serious accident in 2014, which put me in hospital for nine weeks.

Cyclists who refuse to take precautions are putting their lives at risks, imo.

Can we please not turn this thread into an argument about helmets? I suppose I started it, with my light-hearted comment about no helmets being in sight, but any such argument belongs in another thread.

Reminds me a bit of the news item about the French lady (they always seem to be French for some reason) who’s officially declared the oldest person in the world. When she’s interviewed she’s almost invariably puffing away on a fag and telling the world that the Gauloises never did her any harm. So there you go, smoking is safe after all – in fact it’s probably good for you!

No doubt you not wearing a helmet and still (happily) being with us correlate – we’d have to hear though from those non-helmet wearers who didn’t make it for your anecdote to be evidence, and specifically to avoid survivorship bias.

I’d much rather cycle on a modern bike than one from the 50’s. Bah humbug, sorry.
