I briefly met him once - he was waiting for a bus in Byres Rd, so I said hello and he said 'hello back', and then the bus came.

My favourite joke of his, and of course it was the way he told them, went along the lines of - I went into Boots and asked the shop assistant for a bar of soap, she said 'do you want it scented?', and I said 'no, I'll take it with me.'
